Why would you want any of those cameras? Sure, they were pretty good cameras a couple of years ago but SD footage has gone the way of the dinosaurs. Get an HV30; it will cost you less than half as much as some of the options you listed and the image quality will be quadrupled. Otherwise, if you prefer the cinematic look, you could buy one of the DSLRs that shoot video such as the GH1 of 7D.

I really wouldnt prefer hd. my computer isnt ready for it and i want to film action sports and sure hd is nice, but i just dont like the way it looks for action sports. the hv30 is still an option but i want something i can control more.

You could use the HV30 in 60/50i mode and just down res the HD footage to SD. This will make better looking SD footage than you would get if you used one of the cameras listed. The HV30 is also very small, so for action sports in particular it would pay to have a lighter rig.

Agreed. I down res my HF11 footage all the time for family that doesn't have Bluray players. The quality you get from downres'ing is great. Noise is also less apparent when you down res.
FWIW, there's a dvx100b, with extras, for $1000 in the FS & Trade section.

Of the cameras you listed, the DVX100B is the clear winner in terms of format flexibility. Even if you aren't shooting HD, having a real 16:9 progressive mode is essential for broadcast and web delivery these days.

If I could have either a DVX or an HV as my only camera, I would pick the DVX every time.

I've never noticed the difference in HD and SD for action sports. Can someone explain please?
    HV40, xh-a1 hood, Velbon dv7000 tripod, Raynox 6600-52, Opteka .3x, x-grip
