    Default 5Dll & 7D @ Skywalker Ranch

I thought this was worthy of being in its own thread. But Phil Bloom was invited out to the Skywalker Ranch (Yes...the one owned by George Lucas). Apparently those guys are admirers of his work on the DSLRs. He spent some time out there shooting for George Lucas and company on the 5Dll and 7D. Below is a link to his blog where you can click on the link to the short film he made of the ranch. Quentin Tarentino was there as well as some other notables. If anything I thought this would inspire those of you who own or are thinking of owning one of these cameras to go out and shoot something. This had to be a cool experience for him. Read his blog...I think he has some pretty cool things to say.

And here is the clip he screened on Lucas' 40 foot screen (which he and others said passed with flying colors...wow).

    Ian,

I think I enjoyed the BLOG as much as the video.

How are you coming along with getting to know your 7D?

Am I allowed to feel chuffed to bits, to have been a tiny part of this?

Who'd have thought that from humble beginnings, the Glidetrack would end up being involved in something like this.

With a little bit more work on my part I think I'll be up to a fraction as good as you Bif. Yeah, his blog seemed like he was a kid in the candy store....but who wouldn't feel that way under the circumstances. This is also a big big networking opportunity for him.

Alastair...kudos to you and a great product. I gotta have one myself.

Mrblofish...I am tempted myself to get that book (if not now then in the very near future). I've read where others were asking the same question as you but have not seen anything definitive. But PB has put a lot of effort into using these tools and based on his work I'd say it must be thorough.

I am definitely sold on the glidetrack. It adds a lot to shots like those ones.
Of course the price could be better

There was just one rack focus in there. I promise you. See who spots it first.

Alastair's superb new Glidetrack Shooter lifted the piece enormously, especially on the shitty weather first half which was all grey.

Hey Philip...once again good stuff here. I'm going to have to buy your book after this.

Yeah that has to be one of the most fun posts i've read in a long time. Most of us have at one point or another dreamed of something like this happening to us, but having it happen to a good friend like Phil feels just as good. Philip really deserves this for all his hard and sincere work. Good Job Phil

Some of what I first thought were rack focus shots were either zoom outs or dolly/glide outs. My bad.

Don't get me wrong, I did like the video though. We get a lot of rack focus teasing here because everyone wants to try it. Just PLEASE don't do a rack focus on your cat!

I want to know what looked better, the 5d or the ex3 with the letus ultimate on the big screen, he didn't get to detailed about it. I would think they would be close.

We had some tech issues with the Ultimate, so it was performing at it's best which is a shame as what we saw looked superb.

I'm guessing you didn't manage to get yourself a picture of yourself with Spielberg and Tarantino, or did you?

Video looked epic. A bit long, but I guess it isn't meant for general consumption just to show what these cameras are capable of.

I went to a film festival the other day and they had a film which I later found out was shot on the Letus Extreme, looked great on the big screen except for a big spec of dust which was stuck in the middle for most of the movie. I was talking to one of the people who worked on the film and they said they litterally had no idea untill it was on the big screen.

I can see how you would be worried just before your film was shown, having it that big means every imperfection is about 3 foot across.

Well it is a great movie but i don't like every shot. I watched the 1080p version.
Like 0:54 where the trees are without any detail, just a colorful blur spot, and this looks great on the big screen??? I would have made it deep focus, but i still wonder if 7d can handle the details. This is where a higher resolution camera get better results i think.
and 1:23,2:30 with weird and ugly fake blurs on the left and right sides of the screen.

    De fog shots are beautiful.
