ok, i reloaded the page and the video worked... then the music started, no wonder my Lisa II didn't want to play it the first time.

sorry, im just being dumb now, but seriously i do have something to say about the video.

i dont think a DOF adapter would take anything away from these shots, if anything it forces the viewers eye to see what you find interesting PLUS any HD camera made in the last 3 years could get shots this nice, with a dolly and locations like this PLUS a little Andrew Kramer and Magic Bullet!

Can you guys tell im getting wasted? nite nite

An 5D Mark II on a Glidecam can do better than that even with shallow DOF

Getting shallow DOF can be done easily with the HVXX. Set your cam further back and zoom in, or put the cam super close to the subject. I have found that some of the stuff I've shot on a naked HV40 has a very cinematic look to it, with a shallow depth of field. It definitely takes some time to set up, but it works...

But the bokeh of HV40 is not forming a circle. if you do a tele shot, you need a good tripod, if you shot very close, for example a face, it will look very unnatural, and I believe that shot is called macro.

Not true. If you lock the aperture at full open f1.8 when fully zoomed out, the Hv20 bokeh is indeed circular. You end up in diamond city only if you step down the aperture, which admittedly is very common ;-)

See attachment - HV20, with the above settings, in AE mode, i actually shot this with a widescreen adapter attached, but you get the same results with plain vanilla HV.

This one is also HV20's own DOF, this time i had a variable ND on the lens (to control exposure, as i shot this in cinemode)

Oh, I was wrong. You are truly an expert. By the way, which widescreen adapter are you using?

hi i am new on this forum but i am not new on 35 mm adapters. I am amazed how every body is pointing only on the depth of field when they are using 35 mm adapters.Well it is not only about dept of field but all the other things that you get shooting thru lenses. What about the colors and the light for example? Everything is better thru lenses. The information that the light caries into the camcorder is different it is more real thru lenses (depending on the lenses) .Therefore the colors looks great also.
Yes you can get a nice video ore picture with naked camcorders or cameras but using 35 mm adapters will only give you even better results.

    1) It can of course, when you know how to use the tool.
    2) That's the simplest way to isolate your subject and get a nice "DOF".
    3) I've shot a music video using the HV40 with a simple Raynox WideAngle lens. I've even been able to get some nice rack-focus in one scene. If you know how to work your image in post, the bare HV can produce amazing results. Search in my vimeo profile (linked in my signature) for a video called "La Fille Du Dep", it has a close up on a guitar thumbnail. You'll see what can be achieved with the bare camcorder without adapter and other stuff.
    4) As I said, you have to know your tool before being able to use it properlly. Buying an expensive hammer won't make you a better builder/carpenter...get the point?

I don't know about that... it sure doesn't hurt I've built some mighty nice things with a fancy hammer before

As I see, you really got my point!

That's for sure, but someone motivated without the skills wouldn't be called "determined"? It won't make anything any better, that's my point.

I like the diamond out-of-focus looks from the HV40.

Nice video. It shows how good it can look without much treatment.

Thanks. Goes to show that with any camera, even including DSLRs, your shots will look a step above the rest with a little forethought and patience with your focusing. People with aspirations have got to remember that the T2i or 5D aren't the only cams that have manual focus. Never forget the previous technology.

LOL, this thread is funny. Reminds me of the goofy "filmlook" arguments people used to have back in the DVX100 days.

I know it's definitively not, but I'm curious, what's your views on it?

And your right, a naked camera can give off very nice images. But what's wrong with having a depth of field adapter?
shouldn't that be Point IN Case ? LOL !
