if you can bring the video signal from your cam to your thinkpad, so yes you can do it.
you must have (or add) a video imput on your computer.
You could rip off the monitor and mount it somehow, but you would need a LCD controller or something or other adapter as the signal from your cam (CVBS) is different from the signal of your LCD (RGBHV)..
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong in assuming that.
Does your ThinkPad have an expresscard port?
Michael
Nop, its a thinkpad x41tablet, so its pretty old ...

So I will need a video card, any recommendation (cheap recommendation)
It does have a cardbus port...so you could use a firewire cardbus adapter to bring the video into your ThinkPad...like this one: http://www.siig.com/ViewProduct.aspx?pn=NN-PCM222-S4

well the problem is that my HG10 doesn't have a firewire connection, so I'm thinking on a 3rca (component) to vga connection. What do you think? Thanks!
Hi,
I've been reading this thread with interest, since I have a spare small Thinkpad that I could use. In my case, it is an X24, and I have a cardbus video adapter which has a composite video cable. I'll see how this works. If I can make VLC stream the video, then I can flip the image horizontally and then use a mirror in the keyboard to flip it vertically, which would yield a great solution when I get a DOF adapter.
The main problem with incorporating a Thinkpad to a rig would be the bulk and weight (I figure my X24 is about 3.5 lbs.) The advantages are flexibility and no need for extra battery.

Nevermind, I don't think you can monitor video via the AV out. I think that only works for Playback (but I'm still going through the manual, so I might be wrong.) Maybe it's time to think about an external DVD Player...
I believe that the dvd player is a better solution in terms of size, but Why should work better than a 3rca component -> 3rca component video card -> thinkpad ?
or hdmi -> hdmi video card? (maybe more expensive than the dvd player![]()
Well, the Thinkpad could probably work. I think the main problem with the Thinkpad for me, the way I see it, is the awckward set up due to size and weight. The main advantage is the built-in battery, but even this advantage is debatable. As far as the cost, I really don't know what might be more expensive. If you need to get a Cardbus card for the Thinkpad which takes Component video (if it even exists,) that might cost you probably more than the standalone DVD player. And then you have to factor in the mounting solution as well (mounting the Thinkpad seems like might be more challenging than mounting the DVD Player, but then again I might be wrong.
I really don't want to discourage you from trying to go with the Thinkpad. As a matter of fact, I would be very interested in seeing how things work out for you.![]()
Just to mention that if there were a way to monitor the video from Linux, you can do a low level X manipulation on the screen to flip the image both vertically and horizontally with this simple command:
xrandr -x -y
And I'm sure there are ways to do that in Windows also. The toughest part is going to be finding a way to get the video signal into the Thinkpad without spending too much cashola.
****EDIT: If anybody using Linux was adventurous enough to try that, you can return to normal projection by doing:
xrandr -o normal
Then again, if you did that you are going to have a hell of a time trying to read this.![]()

update: Not a suitable connector

The more I consider this issue, the more I think using one of the portable Sony DVD players is the way to go. Lighter, easier to mount (swivel screen), also can mount upside down, looks more professional, and much less hassle. But if you are one of the people that like to do something just to prove it can be done, I applaud you!
Please keep us updated.
Going to try to connect my HG10 to the x41 thinkpad with this (35€) for recording with DOF motoring

what do you think? (wep I won't give up :P )
AutmnAutist,
I see you have been doing some serious research into this, and I can tell you are serious about it. I think that might actually work, depending on whether the software allows you to monitor the live signal (I'm sure that would be doable.) Investigate on the limitations of the input signal that the adapter can take. Unless you know that it won't work due to some limitation, you can give it a shot. If it doesn't work I suppose you can resell the adaptor in eBay, and not stand to lose too much given the price.
I'm definitely interested in how this pans out.![]()
A little update: with windows and vlc with the effect plugin transform rotate 180, works quite well. I will do a screen capture for you guys to see the quality of the adapter. I'm a newbie so, in my eyes, doesn't seems a very good image but sufficient for framing and focusing. the lag doesn't seems to big (that is to my eyes)
The problem arises when I try to use the thinkpad with fedora, no way the devise gets detectedbut I'm working on it.
The thinkpads aren't good for this work due to the low light monitors. Better to use a oled non glossing laptop.
Sorry for my portuguese english
The post name should be changed to laptop as monitor because this solution should work for every laptop with windows and a usb
You've inspired me to try something autumnautist. I think I'm going to yank the lcd out of an old apple powerbook I have and try wiring it up. Thanks for the inspiration.
If the project looks promising, I'll start a build thread.
You should thank simm instead![]()
So your idea must be connect the lcd to an adapter to camera
and give the energy with a battery. what kind of battery? do you have the connectors?
maybe will be you that will inspire me...![]()
Your gonna drive yourself crazy with this setup, I would spend the time and money on a dvd player. There's no delay and the res is better.
Not sure what I'll do about a battery. I'll probably use a setup consisting of c cell ni-mh or sub-c cell ni-cad. The battery would mount on my tripod.
That's what I'm thinking. I found a 14inch widescreen from an HP laptop for less than $10. If I can find some wiring schematics, I might give it a go instead of the powerbook lcd, since it isn't ws.
I'm seriously contemplating picking up a broken portable dvd player to use. It would be much simpler (and smaller), but not as cool.
Right now I'm in the process of making a top mount handle for my hf11. Handle is complete, just need to figure out how I'm going to mount it. Once that's done, I'll start thinking about the lcd.
Oh, some other lcd's to consider - flip up lcd's from PSOne and GameCube video game systems.
