Awesome video of awesome subject matter. It's probably a very good thing that the day was overcast, or you might have had a heck of a time with lens flare issues.
    Very enjoyable

Actually towards the end of the day it was becoming sunny, and so I used a 43mm Lens hood to kill that off but the lens flare really wasn't and issue for me any ways.
Glad you liked it Check out the video I made last year on vimeo.

Overall a great show! Right there at :21 is the 'Mile High Militia', the Colorado Air National Guard stationed about 15 miles from here at Buckley AFB.

I prefer a little less movement in the beginning...more straight cuts rather than pan-and-zooms...a bit of vertigo after a few minutes.

The flying was great! Sometimes its nice for the overcast so you can get the feeling of speed and movement of the airplanes. Nice tight shots without losing the composition.

    Thanks!

-Weight to hold down your tripod

-Lens hood to kill off lens flare on a sunny day
    -Tripod
    -Smooth tripod head

Realistically, thats all you need just be ready to pan quickly while tilting at the same time, its rather difficult but practice makes perfect! or else i just really suck! haha. Possibly a polarizer, and UV filter are good options depending on the light that day.

Reason for weighting down the tripod is so that when you try to pan as fast as the aircraft flies past you, you wont be lifting your tripod up off the ground by accident.

I find the tripod head should be loose but enough tension that you aren't shaking too much. but find your feel for it.

Awesome video! Loved it. Usually a 6 min video is way to long for me to watch but I was glued to the screen the whole time.

I'm glad that worked! I was worried about its length. Knowing average human attn span is roughly 3 minutes. I was sure pushing it.

impressive video, i wonder how you got the planes so smooth in focus. did you use a special standard for the camera?

I only used the "shade" preset. That showed a lot nice color for me. 30p. Otherwise, it was the camera on its own defaults.

that was 30 direct or 60i slowed down to 30p. It looks too smooth (and slow) for anything but 60i.

Yea I agree, I really loved it too! And I barely get past 30 seconds of most things.

Thanks! Yes its 30P ONLY nothing frame rate wise changed. From capture to presentation, its remained the same.

The video was awesome but knowing you shot this from all 30p makes it 10 times more so for me because for the life of me I can't get 30p to be that smooth when doing any kind of panning or movement only in 60i.

    Thank you!

yeah it certainly is smooth but my eye keeps being bothered by the inconsistencies of my tripod head. the panning tends to stutter and it drives my eyes nuts. The slow pans and tilts are ruined because of it
