    Default Print-to-tape with HV30

I'll will very soon have my project ready. It is about 55 minutes and I plan to export it back to my HV30 using the print-to-tape function in FCE.

I've learned that this operation will take some 10 to 12 times the length of the video meaning that I have to wait probably more than 10 hours before the operation is finished.

    My question is:

Will it harm the HV30 if I have it in the PLAY-mode waiting for FCE to finalize the conversion and start transferring it back to the camera?

There should be no harm done. It is one of the functions the camera is designed for. It's like, would it hurt my VCR if I leave it on for 10 hours?

    Ten hours for 55 minutes? You're running FCE on a C64? ;-)

Shouldn't take longer than 3 hours.

Yes, I've heard that it will take 10-12 times the video length to have it encoded for HDV again. And I have a iMac with 4 Gb...

    Thanks for your replies.

Out of curiosity is your iMac Intel (Core Duo or Core2 Duo?), G5, or G4?

    It's Intel Core 2 Duo.

By the way, a couple of months ago I tried the print-to-tape feature coding a 1 min 20 sec video to my HV30. It took more than 10 minutes...

What codec are you saving to when you capture from the tape?

Huh... I wouldn't think it would take that long. Are you doing anything else at the time as well, or are you just leaving it alone while it converts.

I could understand 2 or 3x as long... depending on how close to realtime it encodes to HDV and then it takes realtime to put it back on... but 10x seems pretty excessive. It's about what I'd expect out of my PowerBook.

OK, I'll will give it a new try within a few days when I'm ready to export it.
