Default Davidson Star D tripod...broken legs

    Hi,

I'm not able to afford a new tripod (I'm the film scorer in my crew and all my money is going towards a film scoring computer/rig), but I found an old Davidson Star D tripod. We're only in highschool and none of us have a tripod so it's either this or mustering up some cash (prefer the first). The problem is, the legs are broken, but the head is in great condition and works unbelievably well. It's my Dad's and he said he got it around 1960.

I was wondering if I could get a new pair of legs for it. Here are the pictures:

    Thanks in advance!

That's a stills tripod (well, part of one, anyway) — doubtful it has any pan/tilt dampening whatsoever. Even if you manage to find a set of legs for that thing you still won't have a tripod remotely suitable for your purpose. My advice is save up roughly $150 and read the tripods sticky.

It pans and tilts extremely well actually. It's a full fluid head and it's very very smooth.

I was just wondering if I could buy a new pair of legs as in if they make any legs now that could fit on something like that.

I'll eventually save up the money for a tripod, but my focus now is scoring films and that's where my money is going. It's getting annoying that I continuously have to pay for stuff I don't really want (tripod) in order to make the movies. I just want to get the film scoring equipment, but I'm the only one with a camera and some type of tripod. I can't continue to spend hundreds of dollars for cameras and camera gear so that other people can use them.

Can't be. In the early 1960s, this is what fluid heads looked like:

    Default Craigs List

I found numerous ads for used tripods on CL. I ended up buying a fluid head tripod for $15.

Really? Well it pans as smooth as one anyway. I've used some and it's just as smooth. The only problem is the legs.

I saw one of those star-d things on craigslist the other day. On the Austin list, but the location seemed more Houston-ish. $30. It looks like it's legs are in good shape. The ball joint was positioned away from the image so who knows. It did look to have good joints IMO. If it didn't cost more in gas to go get it, than it's listed for, perhaps I'd get one too.

Perhaps this would work for you, or you could salvage it's legs. If it's close enough. You could always make legs out of wood and screws, or other scrap laying about. Or just duct tape the pole part to something with legs.
