Default LCD Hood in 5 min - Simple to Build and Looks good too

    Hi Guys,

I've only had my HV40 for about a week and I'm new to this forum, so I'm hoping this post is where it should be. In any case I made a simple fold up LCD Hood that looks pretty good and works well.

The PDF I've created for the design is for A4 Paper and you will need to set print Scale to NONE. If this design create issues for the guys using US Letter please let me know and I re-design it so it prints ok for you guy too.

    The PDF is available Here

If you feel it needs a video tutorial let me know.

    Cheers
    Paul

In the PDF the arrows to the cut out parts are backwards.

Thanks Man, I must have missed that . . whoops!

I'm thinking of adding a bottom flap to allow easier access to the Screen Buttons if previewing outdoors.

Edit: PDF File now updated with Arrows pointing to correct part (Thanks JERKSTORE)

Anyone printed this on US Letter? and Does it print ok or does some of it get chopped off?

Printed OK on US Letter using No Scaling and Auto Center. Thanks for this great hood. Can't wait to try it. Very practical (make a new one it gets wet or worn out) and looks good too. I might spray it with a flat urethane for greater protection from the elements. Plus, I might modify the bottom flap that covers the LCD control buttons so I can still use them if needed.

Great advertising for your website too.

Khaver, Thanks for the feedback on the printing, that helps heaps! Don't worry about modding the Bottom, I have a great idea for this and it will block out all the light too!

The Paper Aircraft site is my son's thing. He picks a model and we develop it together. He does all the research and I do all the cad and flat pattern development. I never thought I would go from Designing Tooling for Aerospace to using my skills to develop paper models! The things our kids make us do

Updated the design to include an optional Hatch on the bottom, that give clear access to the LCD buttons. PDF has been updated to include this change. I've had a few emails about what glue to use and construction sequence etc. Will provide more info on this shortly.

    You're welcome OneMan

I'm guessing you worked out how to put it together ok? I've had a number of people email me saying they are confused. I've put a short video together that might help. Will upload soon.

Thanks for the video tut. I used a thicker card stock for mine. Very sturdy, though I had to custom fit it on the LCD before gluing the 2 pieces together so it wasn't too tight of a fit. After the glue had dried, I also used a black felt tip marker along the edges and folds to cover any white showing at the cuts and where toner had flaked off. Because I used a thicker paper, I was able to use white household "elmers" glue. It didn't distort the card stock.

Thanks again for this great little DIY accessory.

I actually haven't tried it out with thicker stock yet. I'm sure it will make for a more durable Hood.

BTW: I printed one with Inkjet and it doesn't block out as much light. So if anyone is using an inkjet, I would go down the path of thicker paper. Laser really is the way to go.

I just had feedback from a guy in New Zealand who used it for an outdoor shoot and it worked well! I can't wait to try it out the next time we shoot some RC Planes.

I wonder what my next project should be

Nice, someone did a more basic one of these a few years ago but very nice indeed!

Funny you say that, because I actually found that one last night while doing a google search for "hv30 lcd hood".

The first one I did was just basic white paper and it was too bright. Once I printed one with Black on the outside and inside, it made the world of difference.

I have made two of these now, the first one with card stock and double sided tape, the second one with a high quality paper (thicker than regular, but not cardstock), both printed on a laser printer. The cardstock one definitely feels more robust, but the one with the high quality paper is good too, and both block the light pretty well.

Now, if you could make this so it was actually foldable for storage, then popped into shape for use, that would be AWESOME!

Oh, and it's pretty awesome as it is.

I know someone who is having a go at making one that folds, but it looks too bulky and I don't like rubber bands etc on the camera. This one looks good . . actually better than expected.

I'll see what I can come up with that folds away and still maintains the look and feel of this design.

    Stop Folding!!

    Version 3.0 is coming soon!

I have made yet another mod and this time you can fold it up and it works great. So basically you could have a few folded up in your camera bag ready go. Will post the new design soon.

When I say soon I mean tomorrow . . hopefully

    Cheers
