Default Anyone willing to offer course in HV30?

I admittedly have a learning block at this time. I feel like tossing the manual into the ocean...thou I know that is ridiculous. I know it isnt not just because i am a female as I have made award winning films that have even made broadcast in the past. I just feel alone and am struggling with mac, FCStudio and now this camera. Often I wonder if Am i oput of my realm , over my head. ???

I would so much prefer learning with another person.
I wonder if anyone who has mastered this camera would consider having some intensive classes. Perhaps there may be several folks interested so the teacher could charge a good price, make some cash and really help others to improve our skill. Feedback Anyone ??

What exactly is the problem you are having? Besides a convoluted way of setting exposure and the dreaded pulldown removal stuff there is nothing much specific about this camera, considering that you already know general stuff about video and photography.

Go to an Apple store, if there's one near you. They have courses (some even for free) in Final Cut Studio. Even just the single apps. It's well worth the courses and your time.

Maybe you're trying to learn too much at one time. You'll have to learn according to your learning style in order to do well.

The JumpStart guide is a very good starter course. It offers more than enough to get you started. More than enough. There's not much to the camera: decide whether you want to shoot in Aperture Priority mode, Shutter Priority mode, or Cine mode; bathe your scene in enough light (I don't fiddle around with the cell phone trick thing. Just flood your scene with light and be done.); lock your exposure; and focus manually. The rest is all cinematography and DPing.

Can you nail down your problems into specific questions? You could search for that exact thing. You're likely going to get a bunch of answers, but it's a start...

Just opened and tried to watch the dvd that came with the camera. Unfortunaetly it was defective and would not play and was Jump guide to producing great videos instead of the hv30 guide. Its been too long to make a deal with B&H . With shipping, the guide for the hv30 comes to 45.50. Is it really great...and worth that cash? Im in canada so with the exchange that dvd is like 60 bucka roos....

There is no DVD comes with the camera. There is only a CD with software to manipulate photos from the camera. Are you saying you load that CD to your DVD player and try to watch it on TV?

I bought my HV30 and it came in a package deal that included the dvd jumpstart to shooting and producing great videos. I didnt think it was anything that i really was interested in but i tried to play it yesterday. it played about 5 minutes and then the rest was defective. i really wish it had been the HV30 jumpstart dvd . Im trying to decide if this dvd is worth the high price....

Here's a tip: Download the pdf manual from Canon. Put it on your computer and have your camera handy. Pdf makes it real convenient as you can size the type and illustrations and jump from page to page. Made a difficult task of trying to read the obnoxious manual into something quite livable.
    Best of luck.

    Default HV20-HV30 Jumpstart Guide for $2.95 (B&H)

I ordered this DVD last week, a "STEAL" at $2.95 from B&H. I have been told most of the controls are exactly the same on the HV30. The only real difference is the color of the plastics.

It covers a lot of the controls and how to make adjustments, this should work for you and not break the bank.

I bought the HV20 DVD for the fun of it. So far I don't like it much. Maybe it will get better further. Typing the words over screen with sort of center/right paragraph alignment, when everything moves around, is really nauseating. I will report back. I bought this DVD to see how they did this instructional DVD. I have another one, from HandsOnHDV about the Sony HC1, that one looks like a very professional product and provides some good info, not every trick, but some good info nevertheless.

What are you wanting to learn, more specifically? What will be your primary use?
That would be helpful as not everyone is well versed to every aspect of this camera.

You included FCP. Do you also want to learn editing? How about the Mac, in general?

    More details, please.

Thanks previdman. I noticed that nasty rach on your cheeks has cleared up and now you just look well loved !
I posted this thread in a moment of feeling totally alone and overwhelmed. The responses and especially one PM have really helped. I recently travelled to a larger centre and found/ bought a book on the camera so i now feel like i have more than just the manual to get a grip . I like to feel as though i can learn every detail of things, to deeply understand them sometimes before I feel confident about my skill. Just one nasty quirk!

Yes I am teaching myself to get around my macbook pro. I love it and things feel intuitive to a large degree. I also recently bought Final Cut Studio so that will be a HUGE learning curve. There are no apple stores in my town so I know to take a course I would have to travel which i am willing to do. I think it would be great to learn with a small group using the HV 30 and Final Cut thus the post. My original plan was to edit some old DV footage but right from the get go the audio was 12 bit and so it kept telling me that it would go out of sync. Although I really want to use that footage I am at a disavantage in being such a beginner and having issues to deal with right off the bat. I gues it would be better to start with current footage.
So thats what is up. I am just starting the book and life is a little more settled down giving me some time to get into things more...
    I love this forum too
