Seems like a pretty good deal for $179:

correction: The external mic jack is stereo.

The Zi8 also has image stabilization, 720p/60 fps and face tracking.

This is seriously a cool setup... I hadn't considered something like this, and it would've probably been just the sort of idea to help me out. A few months ago, I lugged my HV30 around for half a trip and barely used it because it felt inaccessible, was literally living out of my backpack for three months (on purpose, mind you) and would have loved a simple setup like yours. As it was, the hv30 was too much weight, too much fret, and never in use, so I sent it home and just took stills. Wish I'd seen yours before I left.

Could you explain what some of the lenses and attachments are (particularly here http://hv20.com/showpost.php?p=247792&postcount=20) ? Whether you rigged it up yourself or there are ready made parts to hook the lens to the mino, whether you got any footage up?

    Thanks.

Default I love my Kodak Zi8!!!

I just received my Kodak Zi8 a few days ago. I love it. I immediately drove out and made a video of some locations I wanted to see. You can see my video here
    "http://www.youtube.com/v/http://www.youtube.com/user/goramsey"
I shot most with the Manfrotto fluid head monopod, which I recommend highly. I was very lucky in that Kodak had a one day special for $ 143.00. I added the discount code I found on the internet and paid a total price of $ 122.99. What a deal. It is a great camera to just be able to carry around. Quality is fantastic for such a small and cheap camera. The movie I shot was in 720p.

    Enjoy!!

    Default Get a HF M30

I went through this a couple of weeks ago... decided on the HF M30... about the same size as those flip things and MUCH better quality, almost like having a real camera.

Yes, I consider it a "pocket cam"... I carry mine 24/7 in a VERY small fanny pack but it'll do just as well in the pocket of a large coat.

The advantage is that you give up very little in terms of quality of the small size as opposed to those flip cams

The Zi8 is a decent budget choice. Don't expect miracles. I travel with a Panny HF100 or HF10. Small, lightweight, great IQ, but maybe too big for your ideal use. Sanyo is decent as well.

I have the Flip Ultra HD. Everything is great with this camera until play back. The play back is like stop motion video. None of the upgrades seem to fix this problem. If you send videos to a friend, they will get a smooth play back but you will see very stoppie video on your computer. Flip has received a lot of complaints about this problem and they response is for you to send them every small detail about your computer.

    Thanks

I have 2 Kodak PlaySport pocket video cameras and like them. I use them above and under water. Can't beat them for $100. each. I put these things through a lot of abuse and they keep working great. I get unique shots with them because they are so inexpensive, I put them in risky situations all the time. 1080p 30f, 720p 30/60, 5mp photos, slow motion playback that goes very slow. This is a really cool feature when I blasted off a rocket with my son and recorded it. I shot this video with the Kodak PlaySport (without wide angle or fish eye lens adapter) to give you an idea of the video quality:

I have the remote, a wide angle lens adapter, fish eye lens adapter, a life jacket and I just got 2 chargers and 12 Kodak OEM batteries on ebay. Can't beat authentic Kodak batteries for $6.30 shipped to your door. I never have to worry about running out of battery power:

Whatever you choose, I'm sure you will like it. Most are pretty good from what I understand.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004J3ZV62

It is a point and shoot.. but it takes 1080p videos. Also can optical zoom during video taking.

I like my Sony Cybershot DSC-WX5, amazing HD video quality, and the 12 Mpix stills are pretty good, too...
