    Default Edit posts disabled

    Hello forum admins,
I apologise up front for any ignorance - I'm not a tech geek - but I can't edit my posts anymore. I'm logged in and the thread where I'm trying to edit a post is not locked. The Edit button is simply not there. I can create a new one but I don't like to unnecessarily bounce threads with new posts.

As far as I remember posts don't expire for edit, do they?

    cheers

    Unfortunately, yes, they do.

Wasn't always like this though, but as usual a few ruined it for the rest, by indiscriminately editing (and deleting) their posts.
It made quite a few threads read rather odd.

Editing and deleting of own posts is automatically disabled after 59 minutes (IIRC).

Huh, I'd suggest that this is put on display somewhere. Being a frequent user, I had no idea that there's a time limit, until today. This is the closest thing I found as an announcement... The FAQ's doesn't mention this, no sticky and it does say "You may edit your posts" on the bottom of the page when I'm logged in... Unless I'm looking in the wrong sections?

Now, I understand the reasoning. But to lock out everyone that might need to edit an hour old post does seem to be over-doing it. And in my mind would be creating more bother for mods and admins than it eliminates.

Because as it seems to me right now, if I have a thread that's pretty long and would like to keep the first post updated with concise latest updates, I couldn't... unless I had one update to do include the first hour. Is this reason enough to bother an admin or mod?

Or maybe such simple things as writing an answer in a thread with a link, then surf around for an hour, returning, wondering why no reply has been made. Oh, yeah, in the link there seems to have crept in a "_" at the beginning or end, rendering it useless. No quick-fix available. Only to bother an admin or mod.

I'm sure the list could go on for banal things that'll creep up. Or maybe they haven't.

And if malicious self-deletion and self-editing is a worse problem than I realize, what may be an answer? Maybe "earning" the right to self-rectifying after a number of non-malicious posts? Maybe single the malicious users out with the ban of edit and delete?

I'm sure that these questions has been dealt with before making this decision. I just couldn't find the thread... So I'll use this one to air my views... I just hope I won't need to edit this post after 04:13 CEST...

The Frequently Asked Question doesn't mention it because it is not a frequently asked question.

It's probably at least partially my fault, although it wasn't indiscriminate. It was deliberate. Back when we were having political debates, my posts elicited some nasty emails from both sides of the political spectrum.

So I removed my email address and deleted some of the posts in the political section. The deleted posts were returned and the lock out began soon afterward.

Unfortunately that results in less debate and/or expression. (And I don't think my posts were extreme, but I did try to point out falicies on both sides.)

    It wasn't you, Duke.

And it's not something on a high priority to try and rectify.
There's pros and cons to alternatives, but compared to alternatives, the current system works surprisingly well (despite some short-comings).

I don't mind the current system, just as long we have that hour or so to fix typos and things like that.

To all Newbies: Have you read this FAQ before posting? Or watched this short video?
If you haven't, then don't complain when I close or move your thread.

If i have a post that i know i will want to edit, i just put a picture in it using the IMG tags. That way you can edit the post by adding stuff to the image. Only problem is its a bit more time consuming and it doesn't get indexed for the search.

Default The option to edit your own posts

    Hey guys;

It's been bothering me lately that I make a post, such as a tutorial thread or footage/review... and I wish to edit it/format it better/add onto it...

I'm not sure what kind of forum software you guys are running, but 99% allow the original poster to edit his own posts... I would like to make a formal request that this option be allowed for all forum members, not just admins and moderators...

Been posted before a few times. There's even a sticky on it, surprised you missed it.

Every forum has it's own policy. We now only allow a post to be edited within a period of time. It was all thanks to Vic Olam's scam.

If you need to update a post, feel free to contact me or other mod. I'd be glad to update it for you.

(thanks Seo for pointing out the old thead).
