I just unboxed my new rode videomic and it has a lot of static in the background like an old scratched record. Anyone else have this problem? Is it the mic or the camera? Thanks, Brandon.

Are you making sure it's not pointed at something causing the static? A friend of mine got a video mic (not a Rode) and when he tested it out there was an enormous amount of noise and he couldn't figure out what it was. Turned out it was pointing at an open glass of soda and he was hearing the fizz.

It seems like I read a post about a similiar problem here on this forum. Maybe if you do a search for rode video mic you might run across it. Also, do you have any other mics you could plug in for a comparison, just to eleminate causes other than the rode mic? Did you try another battery in the mic?
"Fizzing soda" LOL. You'd have to be pretty high to not figure that one out. How about wind.
I'm surprized to hear wind noise creep into the laviers used on the "Today" show that creeps in on a real windy, gusty day when they're doing there outdoor gigs. Isn't there anyway of protecting lapel laveiers from wind noise?
Please post to the proper subforum, thank you.
From the description of the sound, it sounds like their could be a loose connection somewhere along the line. Scratchy static sounds are a result of loose connections more times than not. Interference usually has a different sound to it. Might be a defective mic, or it might be inside the camera. I want to say that I've read a post on this forum about someone having a similar issue and it was a factory defect in the mic. He had it swapped out and the problem went away. Unfortunately, I can't remember where I read it. Sorry!
