Default Request for Comparison Footage 24p vs not 24p

Hello all... Please don't flame me for asking this. I appreciate the time you all take in answering questions for us newbies!

I (and from what I am reading on this forum) and many others would truly appreciate someone who would post a few sample comparison videos showing what can be achieved with 24p.

It would be great if the "volunteer" could create an 60i version, an 24p version without removing pulldown, and a 24p version with pulldown removed?

A critical evaluation of the footage would be welcome as well.

It would truly help those of us who are not sure what the quality difference would be between the 3 if done by someone who truly knows what they are doing...

    Any takers?

There are several such videos posted on this site, but you will have to hunt for the URLs. But if you just want to see the visual difference, then just check these pictures.

    Without pulldown removal:

    With pulldown removed:

The 60i version will look the same as the pulldown removed picture, but it would have more frames when played back.

This isn't a flame so don't take it the wrong way. But for what you ask for the biggest problem is going to be you not knowing what you are doing / looking at. You can't view interlaced video on your computer properly, so a fair comparison between interlace vs. progressive video is going to be impossible. The only way you could even have a chance of seeing the movies correctly is if you have a 1080i HDTV set or monitor and you can send the video to it (with out it getting mutilated by some signal processor along the way) and view it on the HDTV monitor. Unless your display device can natively display both 60i and 24p, you can't compare the "quality" of the playback. It's most likely that when playing 24p material, your HDTV set or DVD player inserts 3:2 pulldown into the signal at some point anyway, which depending on your sensibilities might make you consider that it looks "worse". Also, your set might actually even make 60i progressive with a delacing circuit and display it that way. (which again, is unfair because you are then not actually looking at a 60i signal) My point is, there are so many variables that if you don't know the technical differences and what they mean to start with, you aren't going to be in a position to compare much of anything.

Otherwise, there is no real "quality" difference other than the fact one is interlaced and the other is progressive. Of course, the progressive frames are wrapped in a 60i signal with the infamous hard 3:2 pull-down the HV20 makes. But they are genuine progressively captured frames. You just have to untangle them from the fields. (it's too bad Canon didn't also provide a 30p mode... )

One bonus in 24p mode on the HV20 is that you can shoot with a slightly longer shutter time, hence obtaining a potentially cleaner picture in low light. But that is a very specific scenario.
