    Default Linux Capture

I'm using Linux as my desktop. I'm able to take the HV20 camcorder and stream to the computer over firewire when playing back standard DV video from a tape and capture the feed using Kino. As Kino doesn't support HDV I've tried to get programs like test-mpeg2 working. It hasn't worked out yet so I was wondering if anyone had success using linux to capture from this camera?

I'm really knew to Linux. My boss at work asked me to start investigating it as an alternative to Windows/Office. I don't do video at work but I support about 120 pc's. So far I downloaded and installed Ubuntu Linux and like the Gnone GUI interface. I may put it on a machine at home to fool around with. If I do, I surely will be interested in seeing what I can do with my camcorder attached.

There is a lot of free support out there for Linux so maybe someone will come up with a program to work with HDV but I wouldn't hold my breath. I wouldn't want to live with Linux as my only system right now. It might not be a bad way to go, security wise, for browsing the Internet and grabbing some files. I would definitely have to stay on the Gui end of things. Too old and too tired to go back to the command prompt again after all these years away from it.

Good luck and keep us informed. I know that the one in a thousand people here that might be on Linux would be interested in more input. Frankly I'm surprised that this forum being smack dab in the middle of the creative world has such a high percentage of PC users and not more Mac. I know next to nothing about the Mac, but if video was my main use of computers I might think about a Mac. Nah, on second thought, I would have a hard time finding the level of support as I have on a PC.

Well, I haven't used Office in YEARS!
There's a FREE alternative already called OpenOffice, from http://OpenOffice.org
It's SOLID programming and they make a VERY nice program which gets updated frequently. All free of charge.

Downloading that and de-installing M$ Office might be all you need...that and a few other programs, like xplorer2 instead of Windows Explorer, FireFox or Opera instead of IE, Thunderbird instead of Outlook Express...etc.

Those are dramatic changes that my organization will really balk at, but still worth looking into for some of the people. Open Office is a Linux product though. It doesn't run in a MS Windows environment. Yeah. OpenOffice was automatically installed with Ubuntu Linux. I couldn't believe how easy it was to install the package. Actually Linux installed & ran completely from the CD so you could test it out without partitioning & installing it on the hard drive.

I know I'm probably fairly unique here at this forum but I have struggled through the poorly supported Pinnacle over the past few years. It actually appears to be not too bad of a product in it's latest 10.7 version. Last night I was burning an HD-DVD clip for testing and although I could burn it OK and play it on my Toshiba HD -DVD player OK, it didn't play any audio. The player said that it was an HD disk and it looked fantastic on my 32" LCD. I could not believe how clear stop frame and stepping from frame to frame was on the display. That's the first time that what my HV20 produced really hit me in the face and told me this is really a new world I have entered into. I went back and changed a setting for audio to mpeg1 instead of PCM to burn a new HD-DVD on a standard DVD. I forgot to check it this morning. I'll let you know if I had any success. Evidently their aren't that many people yet producing an HD-DVD yet with this new camera or any HD camcorder for that matter. Yet, I'm sure we all want to be producing an edited HD-DVD or Blu-Ray disk that will play on a desktop player eventually. Am I wrong or isn't that what we're all here for?

It takes about 1.5 hours or so to render a 9 minute clip to DVD. I set it so that it would also put the files in a folder on the hard drive. I'm don't understand what it's doing to create an HD-DVD format on a regular DVD but you can't even pull up a directory of the DVD. You can see the files in a folder I pointed to for it to be recorded on the hard drive. I actully could click on a vob file that it created on the local drive and have Windows player play the video and the audio would play but the video acted a bit jerky. It seemed to play a few frames smoothly and than jump and than play again smoothly and keep repeating this sequence. The video was high resolution and very clean aside from the jerky between som frames.

When I set the program up to create a wmv file, if I didn't choose pcm the audio didn't play. I had accidentally left it to a default of Dolby I think but when I went back and set it to pcm the audio played OK on the resulting wmv file. I saw your mention about audio in another thread. I'm not sure what's going on. I'll have to do a lot more experimenting.

One quick question. I'm going to be doing a lot of taping in the next month at festivals. Would there be a real downside for me to shoot everything in HD knowing that I might want to make some of the resulting video available as SD? I have it in my head, that even though I'm still learning & experimenting that I may as well capture and archive everything high def and worry about how it will be able to be viewed later. Obviously they wouldn't have an SD mode if there wasn't a downside to capturing in HD and worry about conversion to an SD format later in post.

That is NOT true, at all!

OpenOffice is available for PC, OS X, Solaris, and Linux.
In fact the MAIN reason I even suggested OpenOffice WAS because the impact on your company would be minimal, as it would NOT require an OS change at all, but you can have all the benefits of a non-M$ word processor which still can manage Office files if you need it to.

Weren't they going to upgrade GrabMV so it could handle HDV? I know it does SD which is a step up from DV.

Thanks Mal. I'll probably be downloading it very soon and putting it on my machine here at work. I'll do some testing and pass it along to my boss. We definitely should consider it before a decision is made to purchase about 150 Office 2007 licenses.

Gosh, there may be more Linux folks out there than I thought. Thanks for the links duzzit. You just gave me some more things to do. Well, this tech stuff is fun though.

I did go through the installation of the libiec61883 libraries per the "braindead' link. When I run the configure and make it seems to go well w/o errors. When I run test-mpeg2 it seems to just sit and do nothing. I ran the plugreport command and got the following:
    Host Adapter 0
    ==============

    Node 0 GUID 0x00008500014c1952
    ------------------------------
    oMPR n_plugs=1, data_rate=0, bcast_channel=63
    oPCR[0] online=1, bcast_connection=1, n_p2p_connections=0
    channel=63, data_rate=0, overhead_id=15, payload=146
    iMPR n_plugs=1, data_rate=0
    iPCR[0] online=0, bcast_connection=0, n_p2p_connections=0
    channel=63

    Node 1 GUID 0x0011d8000115677d
    ------------------------------
    libiec61883 error: error reading oMPR
    libiec61883 error: error reading iMPR

If I've followed the others users directions the report should indicate iPRC[0] online=1. As it states online=0 I assume it isn't finding the datastream. Any suggestions?

I could not get either test-mpeg2 nor grabmv to work with the HV20.
However, mpg1394grab works great. Just google "mpg1394grab.c"
    download and compile.

I downloaded the file but am a bit unsure as to how you compiled it as I'm new to Linux. Got a monemt to elaborate on the steps?

Using another post online that suggested I go to the directory, run terminal and enter the following:
    gcc -lraw1394 mpg1394grab.c -o mpg1394grab

This ran and created an executable file. Is there more or how do you go about launching it?

Basically just "mpg1394grab > capture.ts" and then press play on your HV20. Hit control-C when done to stop the capture.

A little crude, but it's the only app I got to work. I still haven't had time to look into editing tools yet.

You can use xine, ffplay, mplayer etc to play back the .ts file. I also got a TVIX 4100SH attached to the TV to play back the .ts files over the network.

Default HowTo Capture in Linux using libiec61883 and test-mpeg2

I have a dependable and simple CLI based capture method worked out using test-mpeg2. I find the resulting m2t files play best on vlc Media Player. I'm on Ubuntu. Basically it takes the method suggested on the braindead website and more thoroughly explains it. It does involve a compile step, but it's pretty straightforward.

    The full howto is at:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=412826

I think the only problem with this method is that the capture is all one file, and most good video apps will capture and split the files into scenes quite nicely which makes editing easier.

I would love to say that Linux can edit HDV brilliantly but I just haven't found anything that will do it at all. I think Red Hat and Fedora users with very fast computers might be able to use Cinelerra, but on Ubuntu there seem to be some pretty serious conflicts. Jahshaka and LiVES and kdenlive are all at similar stages of development, working on it but not quite there yet. I believe that later in '07 we may see some of these projects come to fruition. Fingers crossed.

Now I absolutely love Linux and Ubuntu, but this is the one area of Linux where the proprietary apps are inexpensive and slick and mature and powerful, and Linux is hardly on base yet.

Until then, as a stopgap I am trying to decide which of the mid-level Windows apps works best for about $100. Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0, Ulead 11, Pinnacle 11. So far I like the Ulead trial v. because it has not crashed once, but it's a little short on features. It's pretty slick so far and it's output options are good, but only two video tracks. It seems surprisingly responsive with HDV on my old laptop hardware, Athlon XP 2400, 512GB. Adobe would not install due to the AMD cpu not supporting SSE2 extensions. I've used Pinnacle 9 up til now for DV but find it slow and less than stable, and Pinnacle tends to nickel and dime you for additional functionality. They say that v11 is much more stable and the Ultimate version has some attractive features like first rate pan-and-zoom on stills. But there is no trial version which makes me nervous.

PS, I would love to see someone who could work out a Linux method to get true 24p files out of the Canon's interlaced footage. The Windows methods I've seen are nothing to brag about.

    Default HDV CApture in Linux

Somebody should contact Gabrial over at Lives(Linux Video Editing System). I watched him make a Custom HDV Capture utility on the fly in 10 minutes for a sony hd-1. and the program worked great. The program was a custum job but I'm sure he used all available libs, and threw a gui on it. The Program was made for a company called Uhdvtech (www.uhdvtech.com). I'm Not sure what they ever did with the program or if they even still have a copy. But I would contact Gabe at LIVES. The program was called hdvgrab or something like that. Hope this Helps. Also if anyone wants to try out Cinelerra without installing linux, all you have to do is download the newest "Dynebolic" Live CD. This allows you to run a full linux editing sweet from your cd rom, or you can copy one file to the hard drive and run from your Hard Drive. For those of you who do not know, Cinelerra is a super cool video editor that is completly resolution independant so if you have some 8k Footage it can take it 20k footage it can take it. It also has 16 cannel audio for 15.1 surround. I was wondering where you would need that many audio channels but I guess Imax uses all 16. "Dynebolic also has a ton of content creation software on it including Kino, Aurdour(Pro tools style Program), Gimp, Blender 3d, Jack, A Bunch of good synth programs for soundtrack work. I used to instal redhat and then go throught the long process of installing all of the programs and hope that they work, But Dynebolic Just works without all of the installation problems. The future is here and cinelerra bundled with dynebolic is light years ahead of most linux solutions. Hope you enjoy.

P.S. Cinelera will take in raw m2t's they just have to have the extention changed to .mpg instead of .m2t. Cinelerra also includes a inverseteleine plugin, but I've never tried it. I use cinelerra mostly for processing my footage out to EXR,Tiff, Or Jpeg Sequences.

Hope all of this helps, and if anyone try's out the Inverstelecine in cinelerra let
us know if it's any good.

    Regards Jeff Baxter

Question can't capture from hv30 to kdenlive or kino

Hello, I just got Linux and downloaded both kdenlive and kino. Unfortunately, i wasn't able to capture from my hv30 with either software. After I hit "record", I got an error message in kdenlive reading:
raw1394 - failed to get handle: Permission denied.

I don't speak linuxese, so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Your problem is this "raw1394 - failed to get handle: Permission denied". Your firewire stack doesn't give you the right permissions. This is a known problem with the latest versions of Linux and dvgrab/Kino, because some stuff were changed in the way permissions are setup. There is a huge thread about it on the ubuntu bug database. Search there.

You can try this on a terminal window:
    sudo chmod a+rw /dev/raw1394 /dev/dv1394
but you would have to do this EVERY TIME after a reboot, because the permissions are getting reset in that folder after a reboot.
