    Default Reward System for Noobs

OK, maybe I'm on a rant here but it could be a way to defuse some of the hostility (granted, maybe only my own) towards noobs who post questions for answers readily found in the archives or camera manual.

For the first 20 posts, a noob gets a gold star .... for a good question or a red 'X' for a bad one. Determined by how easily or how many times the answer can be found in the archives, stickies or owners manual. For each gold star the noob moves steadily ahead...for each big red 'X' he/she/it adds 10 more posts before they can move up in forum title.

The more 'X's they get, the longer it takes to go from 'noob' to "regarded member" status or something like that. The idea is so they'll eventually (hopefully) learn to find their own answers on the forum before posting the obvious question.

I don't know. What do you think? Noobs, I want to hear from you, too.

(I think it's starting to matter to much to me but I do get tired of reading the same crap over and over.)
I know enough to know what works ... at least until it blows up. Then I know it don't.

Previdman, please read the stickies. This has been covered before!

Seriously, though, I lurked for 5 months before my first post. I read it all, and I've never had any of you brilliant mods refer me to any old topics.

You just have to use the search, all the answers are here.

Noobs (I still consider myself one) need to earn their place, like anyone else.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Respectfully,

PS - How do I get true 24p from my HV20 high definition, 1080i dv camera? What is pulldown? How do I do pullup?

    Thanks, Cycle.

You guys, and other great users, are always willing to help out when a legit new issue comes up. Thanks to you and everyone else who works so hard for others.

And as long as the gold star don't go in my arse...... I'll take it!

    Thumbs up

I'm a noob and I'll probably be one for a while since I'm just learning everything about video. But I do like the system, I'll be seeing how much I've grown if you do it.

this system would only matter if they care about their ranking though. it may not register if all they want is their question answered.

And therein lies the problem. The noobs (and others) who treat this place like the Canon Answer Desk are generally the ones suffering my wrath. The Welcome e-mail and READ THIS FIRST FAQ are explicit in how we expect members to conduct themselves and our dislike for those who choose to ignore the very few rules we try to enforce. As has been said repeatedly, this is a self-service forum full of dedicated, but unpaid volunteers who offer their expertise as a courtesy, not a requirement. To come in here with some sense of entitlement is to disrespect every member in here. I would love it if I never again had to admonish some noob for not doing a search first or not reading the FAQ. I get no pleasure from it, believe me. I want to see more people find the answers and information they seek. But I give more value to those who do take the time to do things the way we expect and it is for them that I do what I do because, ultimately, those are the ones who end up sticking around and becoming contributing members in the long run. The ones who come barging through the door looking for quick answers generally don't stay long, regardless of whether they get my sincere welcome or not. Our member roll is filled with people who have less than 10 posts and haven't been in here in over a year or longer, a period that precedes my becoming a mod, so it must not have anything to do with my style.

Bottom line, this is a community, and if you treat it like such it has much to offer. If you treat like an on-demand answer desk, well then, not so much.

Beautifully put. Take a couple gold stars for yourself. Hell take a bunch, they're free and besides with 4,000+ posts you earned 'em.

And I can't believe we've actually been accused of being in cohoots just because we have similar views ... and avatars? I had mine first, that must make me a bigger a-ho than you CW. Nyah, nyah. (Should we tell 'em we were separated at birth only to be reunited again here?)

Heh-heh, the Doctor said "anal." Heh-heh.

Redfalcon: Gold Star +10 pts. for being on the ball.
User: -15 plus additional 25 penalty points if he responds negatively.... again.*
This WILL go on your permanent record.

Been a member for about 6 mos now and this is my first post. My gut tells me that this will only annoy you even more. Besides having to reply to nudge the poster into looking before leaping you will also have the added responsibility of rating the post. Then there will be the argument when people disagree over which post gets and X or not. Then there will be arguments over the workflow that is used to rate the posts some people will prefer a easy workflow whereas others will want to put the rating into some other format that they like better before the rating is applied in post. Also using the color Red might be distracting for some people because of the relationship to a certain camera so they might be drawn to the bad post causing additional comments which I don't think is the desired result.
    <sarcasm ending maybe>
Perhaps you could put all messages from people who have been members for less than a certain amount of time into a special noob bucket. That way those messages that really don't need to get posted won't. The ones that are good get pushed into the right forum. That a message never gets out of the bucket might be a hint to the poster. Also you could make the bucket only visible to the mods. I am not sure if your software supports this or not or even if it is a good idea. Just a thought.

I really do like this forum I come here several times a week and I think that some of the times the tone can come off as a little harsh but I know that I wouldn't want to be a mod for a site that is a popular or as useful as this. So I really appreciate what you do because nothing will kill a site faster than tons of useless stuff. And most of the "good" posts here are very good. So thanks.

I don't own a camera and I do pullups using a bar in my closet. Should I buy a vibrating or spinning adapter?

    Cheers Hal

Add "redundant" to useless and it should be put in bold!

Anytime you're given a choice, regardless of what it's for .... always choose vibrating, most definitely!

Congrats on your first splendid post. I love the bucket idea but think it should be visible to all just in case some of us feel like trolling for dumb noob questions. And then there's the 'social stigma' of eventually becoming a "Bucket Legend" 'cause all your posts are in the bucket.

Yeah, I really like that idea.

    Nominations anyone?

    My pleasure, Vid.

I gotta say though, kissing yours and Cycle's avatars is leaving a bad taste in my mouth.......... eeewwwwww!

Maybe a separate section for admitedly noob questions is a good idea.

You know, if you guys took all the actual good tips, equipment that has been proven useful, diy stuff, etc. and published a book, you could have a big hit on your hands. It could include all the current HV cams and the harddisk models. It would be an amazing resource to have both as a book and a pdf. Way more useful than the manual.

I think we should enact a similar system regarding noobs that is like this... (It's not implied towards you, CycleWriter, don't worry... Just noobs :P )

Those guys are just imitations. That should be against the law. I, on the other hand, am the real thing.

Well, OK. Maybe that is a bit too much. But 2 greenies sho' do make Previdman feel good.

NOTE: Due to the recent posting of insanely stupid noob questions, I can only "assume" the state mental hospital has recently received a bailout windfall. As a result they've given HV camcorders to each and every patient.

THAT is the ONLY explanation I can think of for some of today's and more recent posts.

Or else they're just trying my patience, of which I don't have much to start with.
