I already have a nice set of Bogen Manfrotto 3221 legs. Would the Velbon PH-368 be a good match?

Just got a Velbon Videomate 607. I've got to say, for $70 bucks, this tripod is wonderful. Very smooth panning, plenty of basic features/adjustments. Good height when fully extended. Compact and light for travel. Very stable, though obviously the weight is a slight disadvantage for stability.
My only complain so far is, when fully extended, the extension bar on mine wiggles slightly, making slightly shaky shots when panning. Not severe though. If your going low budget, I'd recommend this tripod. I'll report back after taking it camping in Africa for 2 weeks...
Cheers!
What do you guys think of this tripod...very professional looking...and claims a "true" fluid head:

Only $200.... 16lb capacity.

How is it compared to Mathews M25, is it too heavy and big for HV20/30? Has anyone any experience with this tripod? is it worht it to purchase the caster wheels? Thanks
How does the Velbon Videomate 607 Tripod compare to the Velbon DV7000? Anyone?

Hi,
does anyone of you know the distance from the camera screw to the edge of the Velbon7000 ground plate? I have to know it because of my rig's ground plate which I'd like to fix to the Velbon plate but which has some screws in it as well
To show you what I mean: the distance from the centre to the left (or right) side of the plate (cm if possible)
Thanks a lot.
Hannes.
Does anybody know the difference between a Velbon 7000 and the Velbon DV7000?
I have gotten a lot of great deals off of ebay but think I made a bad mistake this time. I bid on and got for about forty bucks delivered a Velbon 7000 but it is very cheap looking and is not the quality I was expecting at all. The head is not very smooth at all.
I am wondering if the plain ole 7000 wasn't a much cheaper tripod than the DV7000 and I should have thought of that!
Ian,
It sounds like a nice tripod but that 16lb capacity may be overkill for an HV20.
If you are willing to go $200 personally I would look at a name brand with a proven record like the Matthews 25 or something similar. I am in the same situation looking. Basicly I would like a $500 tripod of less than $200. LOL!!
Rentakill,
Thanks for posting that pic. It does look like a very well made tripod and probably what I will go for until I can afford a Sachtler FSB6.
I am trying to build my equipment a little at a time and I just pulled the trigger a few minutes ago on a $419 20" monitor for my editing suite so my cheapo Sunpak Ultra 7500TM tripod will have to last a couple more months. Luckily I don't have anything coming up to shoot before then that I know of.
has anyone tried the gitzo g2180 head with their hv20
I am also interested if anyone has experience with the Davis & Sanford tripod with the FS18 fluid head? Apparently it is a true fluid head vs. the Matthews 25 fluid "effect" head.
I've been looking for a new pod as well. I couldn't find any info on the D&S FS18 but they do have a new F12 that B&H is selling for $82. Again, no info on it's performance but it's out there. Right now I am leaning towards the Bogen 755B & 701RC combo. Seems most opinions are that it's decent but it's very hard to find some solid reviews of it's performance - or any of them for that matter.
I would like to go Sachtler or Cartoni - but that's an invesment I can't justify at the moment. The price tag on the Bogen is pushing it as it is, but I don't want to have to upgrade in a year when it starts to break down.
OK, I already have 3 tripods of varying design from my real job as a still photographer. What I need is just a good, inexpensive fluid head. Preferably less than $150. I'm considering the Manfrotto 701RC2. Anyone with any experience with this model? Also, still cam tripods are almost always of the tubular variety while true video tripods are of the type shown in the Mathews picture posted earlier. Is there any benefit of this design for video? My Gitzo's are plenty sturdy, but I always see serious video guys using that style of tripod so it makes me wonder. Thanks.
I have the SLIK 504QF-II that Eugenia recommended. It is awesome, very well built, and most of all does not require a coin to operate the plate screw. Reasonably priced at B&H.
I just bought the Slik head and a Manfrotto 756XB tripod. I looked at the 701 but I felt it almost too stiff and didn't have the options i would want at that price. The Slik is just as good for a lot less. Plus it can flip the camera sideways and lock which is a bonus for taking stills. Sounds like you have a photo head already so this may not matter.
I have taken some pics but i can't display them - i guess i need online service of some kind? I am also uploading a clip to vimeo. It has some pans in it you can check out there. Send me a PM if you are interested in pics.

I use a Velbon Ultra Luxi SF tripod, that I purchased some time ago for use with my Canon 5D camera (which significantly outweighs the HV20).
Works great with my video shooting, and is unbelievably compact. It's a really nice piece of gear.
I've heard good things about the D&S FM18+Provista Airlift combo from a friend who uses one regularly with his A1, but I'd love to see someone do a head-to-head comparison with the Matthews M25. The D&S combo can be had for about $200 shipped, so these two seem to be the best buys in my price range of $150-200.

The SLIK quick release actually blocks the battery release tab at the bottom of HV20. Do you have to unscrew the Quick Release everytime you change battery?
Taky
Too funny you mention that. I got your batteries today - thank you! Package was ripped open and all but they were still in there.
So I go to put the battery on and of course that's the first thing I notice. It's nice that Canon made it so the tape loads from the top, but you think they could have done something similar with the battery?
Oh well, I don't normally shoot for super long periods without having to tear down so this shouldn't become too much of an issue.
It's still a good value compared to products 2x it's price. I don't think it's too much of an issue - especially with my new long-life batteries.![]()
I have a SLIK tripod so I know the battery release tab is an issue. I just wonder nobody else has mentioned it. Anyway, here's a solution.

Actually Canon has already done so with GL2. The tape loading mechanism is on top. The battery sit down in the compartment. The battery release tab is on top. Press it and use your thumb to push up the battery to release. It's just HV20 is doing is upside down.
(glad you got the batteries)
RentaKill or anyone,
Does the M25 come with the quick release?
