    Default Scoring a short film

I've researched SCORING and found very little information about software and the process, so I found a solution that works for me and thought I'd share.

Sonar 8, has the ability to watch video and play live via your MIDI keyboard while recording, you can then edit and add more layers to your score if you like. I've used Fruity Loops for a while now and Sonar 8 has a lot of simularities but is far more advanced.

This video is scored using sonar 8 and I don't play piano (I think it's passable for a score):

    Sounds good.
I'm always trying to find new ways to come up with original scores, sound is so important and always a weak spot in most of my projects.

thank you, I hope I can score my short film I'm starting on, I probably will get some musicians I know to help me with it then just add all the foley in, and the scary music parts.

Logic Studio will do this if you are using a mac. It's actually perfect for this

I actually use a PC but i've heard of that, I want to learn how to score also so I don't have to worry about copyright infringement and all that other red tape down the road.

I actually have a full copy of Logic Studio (For some reason my video production teacher had it sitting in the back room, even though our class has no Macs) and a MIDI keyboard but it did not get me very far simply because I am so un-musically minded its sad (And I was in band for four years!). I used SonicFire Pro to score one of my shorts and I liked how it turned out, but purchasing tracks can be extremely frustrating as it seems all the really solid tracks can only be bought in packs which are super expensive. Still, you might want to check it out.

Agree on the expense of the tracks.

I foolishly paid for the software, and got a 2 cd's free and then soon after they went and changed the purchasing system for the tracks. You could initially purchase them individually via a download but I'm sure that's gone now.

All the good stuff now seems to be in their premium section where you pay more. Their idea is that because it's dearer there is less exposure to it so it seems more original. That's great if you have the dollars.

A lot of the cheaper pieces seems like elevator music. I think you can get the software free now.

I made one film where I used it to make a score. Actually won AUS$1000 in a film contest. It aint that great but the judges liked it so I'm not arguing. You may have seen it as I've posted it here before. Have a listen.

BTW - I was also in aband for years but was never that musical.
