Default Playback on HV30 LCD screen always looks superior to captured video played back on PC

First time post and a new HV30 user (so please go easy on me!)

I'm using Vegas movie studio platinum to capture HD video from the HV30 filmed at 50i, using firewire.

If I play back my footage and view it on the canon's lcd screen, the video has strong colour and contrast and seems to run silky smoothly.

If I play the same footage on my PC (in preview, rendered, or watching .m2t files direct in vlcmediaplayer) it doesn't seem as smooth (almost half the frame rate?) and the video looks washed out / has lost some of the contrast.

Anyone else had this? Is it just the case that video will always look amazing played on the camera screen because it isn't being transfered or compressed during capture? Or am I doing something wrong during capture?

I haven't played with any settings. This is all straight out of the box.

Screen size has a LOT to do with it looking better. It's always gonna looker crisper on a smaller scree.

But why would the playback appear so much smoother on the camera screen? I capture video through Vegas 8. I thought maybe I had the wrong setting for capture but there are so few options that can't be the case.

Just enable VLCs linear deinterlace and you'll see. M2t 60i video is usually displayed as 30p(combined fileds) in players if they're not deinterlacing for you.
And the camera's LCD is calibrated to image usually given by the camera, you will have to make (small, less is more!!) adjustments do contrast/colour to get the look you're after.

I'm not sure about Vegas Movie Studio, but in Vegas 8 Pro the preview window will not give you an accurate view of the color or contrast of your video either. You should view the video through an external monitor that has been properly calibrated. In that regard, the video you see in the Vegas preview window is inaccurately bad looking. But the video through the HV30's lcd monitor is likely also inaccurately bright and colorful. So, only a calibrated monitor will give you a close idea of what your video really looks like. Therefore, color correction should always be done using a calibrated external monitor for accuracy.
