You guys are great . thank you

I heard the HF S100 takes a special HDMI cable ? - Tripp Lite Mini-HDMI to HDMI Cable (6 feet) has a lot of bad reviews. What would you recommend for a HDMI cable. I want to record LIVE to my desktop computer through a capture card.
Henry Olga suggested a Blackmagic Design cards because they are supported by
Cineform. I want to use Cineform but I am looking for a cheaper card that might be compatable. Trying to save money everywhere I can.

My idea is to shoot a show idea and have live input from the HG s100 inported through a capture card in my desktop and use Cineform to get top quality uncompressed video, then I can choose my compression after editing.
answered my capture card question at http://www.adobe.com/products/premie...card_partners/

    Default Big Discounts on HFS10

Just dropped like a rock at Amazon and B&H. I think around $1107. Darn good price as it had been at full retail $1299 since it's release.

While I'm sure direct capture footage is nice, you will surprised by how clean and sharp the canon AVCHD footage already is. It's not like the hv20, where direct capture really improves ones ability to cleanly color grade in post. I find the hf-s100 doens't really need this extra step to get solid workable footage.

Default Archiving costs for AVCHD are coming down!

    Hey all,

I've been shooting events (recitals, concerts, figure skating, plays...you get the idea) for 6 years now using a pair of DVXb cams.

Love the cams but I want to go HD. Unfortunately the HMC150 is a little out of my financial league at this time.

So I'm thinking of the HFS100. I could get 3 of those for far less than one HMC150. If people can shoot great footage with the HV30 then the HFS100 will more than suffice for my needs.

The thing is I've been concerned about archiving footage after I'm done a project.

It looks like Bluray media has finally crossed the pricing Rubicon.

Here in Canada I order from a great little company (pm me if you want the name) and they are now selllng TDK 25 packs of 4x inkjet hub-printable 25GB Bluray discs for $190 CDN. That's about $7.50/disc. And they'll be offering, I think he said, Microboards media (same specs) for a price that comes out to about $6.50 CDN per disc. Apparently that company is the distributor of Taiyo Yuden media. That's some of the best blank media around. I've burned thousands of DVDs using TY stock and only 3 have ever been "bad" burns.

I realize the media price is considerably higher than blank DVDs for delivering projects to clients but for archiving purposes I can put a 2 hour recital from 3 HFS100 cams on 4 25GB Bluray discs and pay as little as $26 CDN. If I were shooting 3 tape based cams that would run me about $24 CDN.

    I've made my decision.

I'm going Canon HFS100 after this recital season, sex up the cams with rails and lens hoods, maybe a french flag or two and a Samson audio recorder for clean board sound.

And then get me a Red Scarlet 2/3" for my...ahem, directorial ambitions. heh.

    Later.

Hi, I am excited. iIam just about to buy. I was going to save money with the HF s100, but the price drop led me to get the HF s10.
I think I will get the bp 827 , it looks like a good lasting battery.
I would like to get a good protective cover filter so I don't scratch the lens. I was happy to buy one before for a camera, because I had a chicken make a good peck.

Do you recommend a clear filter that won't take away much while I am filming.

I want to thank everyone for helping me make a good decision.

    Heh. Shooting cockfights, are we?

Absolutely. A good UV filter is cheap and offers protection for your cam's lens.

BH Photo has one for just under $13 USD.

I want to thank everyone for helping me make a good decision.
    No problem.

    Hi All,

Thanks for the Toronto-based info on HFS10 dealers. I am trying to get H*nrys to pricematch AmazingPhoto.biz's price...

Can someone please help me decide HFS100 vs HFS10

Does the HFS100 capture photos at 6MP like the HFS10 ? What about CMOS size ? Any other differences ?

They are the same, aside that the S10 has idiotic non-removable built-in memory in addition to the card slot.
Tape is ungood! Interlacing is double ungood!

    hi
for a uv filter, is the HOYA 37UV 37mm UV Filter a good one. You mentioned the Canon 58mm UV Protector Filter Mfr# 2605A008 B&H# CAUVP58, but it looks like it changes the color and tones a little. Or do all filters do that. i just want something to protect the lens.
And does the HF s10 have a 58mm or 37mm lens.

The HFS10/100 has a 58mm thread so you'll need one that size.

I've had UV filters on my DVXb cams since the day they came out of the box. I realize the picture at BH shows some changes to the image but I've not encountered anything you need to worry about.

If somebody knows different feel free to correct me.

On Amazon I found a Canon UV filter 58mm for 9.16$ It seems like a cheap price but I think it would do the job--- protects lens from bumps, scratches and dust
It has a different number than B+H. i used to go with Hoya, but i am all about saving a little money here and there, and I don't think there is to much difference. i could be wrong.

I am going to go with Amazon for the HF S100. What do you think? Do you give me a green light.
I have not bought a new video camera sinse my Canon GL-1, so I am very excited to get a new baby.

I just joined the "S" club, picked up an hf-s100 from a fellow forum member. I haven't had a chance to really use it yet, have to modify some parts of my rig so I can use it with my Jag35. So far it seems pretty nice, better in low light than my hf100 and I am glad to have the extra features like Zebra stripes and 24 mbps codec.

It really does seem idiotic. And you have to have the charger hooked up also, or it won't work. Odd, since downloading really doesn't take that long and most batteries could easily handle the task. And this forces Canon to use the black box corded charger ( not the cute little cordless one that plugs straight into the wall ) which is really a pain to pull out and hook up anytime you're ready to download. The cost difference seems more inline since the discounts started - about only a $100 apart, so that's the only plus.

    M. Tibbs,

Have you considered external hard drives for backup? You can get a 1 TB drive for just over $100 or so. It might beat Bluray. You can also buy a HD tray that fits in a drive bay in your desktop, for PC systems, and slide hard drives in and out. Seems the easiest way to backup HD video. Good luck

    Default Wide-Angle and Zoom

Just wondering ( complaining ) out loud about the overall super-zoom capability of most camcorders ( 200X to 800X sometimes ) and fairly large optical zooms as well, but no wide end. As we all know the digital camera buffs are always asking for wider lens ( 25mm to 28mm on the short end ) and their wishes have been granted.

But it seems most camcorders do not usually offer very wide short ends, and I just wish they would, especially with the zoom capability, they could certainly achieve a wide 24-28mm short end and still have the 240-480mm long end. Why can't ( won't ) they do this?

Thank you for that insight just in the nick of time. I did not know about the painful method of downloading off the internal memory. I had ordered a HFS10 but I'm going to pick up the HFS100 instead.

Can anyone recommend the best SDHC that would match this camcorder ? I have my eye on Sandisk's 16GB or 32GB SDHC Extreme III 30MB/sec which my dealer recommended. Any suggestions from users on these forums ?

I know this is possible on high end camcorders...

Has anyone been able to set up the HFS100 to record HD to SDHC memory but simultaneously live stream (SD) to ustream.

I would think this should be possible by just connecting the AV video out to input of your PC capture card.

    Any thoughts ?

I really like the DOF adapters. Did a search on Utube, and found a guy using a homemade prism to flip the image. Any idea where to buy one?

    Default need some expert help

    Hi all,

I just shot over 20 Gigs of video in MXP mode and wanted to create some DVDs for parents. I used the program that came with the HFS100 and the quality is not good.

We don't have a blu-ray player so i'm just using normal 4.7 GB DVDs.

May someone here give a noob some pointers? thanks in advance.

Whats wrong with the DVD that Pixela produced for you ?

You've been spoilt by looking at your MXP quality video on your computer screen !

Has anyone done some objective head-to-head comparisons on the downconverted output from Pixela versus other editing packages ?

Lots of people trash Pixela but I wonder if the others are really any better ?

And if so, exactly why are they better ?

you could try surplusshed. new prisms and quality prisms in that size from edmund or valumax run about 180 bucks or so for a 50mm x 70mm prism.
i had thought about building something similar, but the cost is just silly and the weight it adds to the smaller cameras just doesn't justify it to me.
you'd be better making a monitor out of a portable dvd player and rigging a bracket.

    Hi everybody,

I'm the happy owner of an HV20 since 2 years. I heard a lot of good things about the HF-S 100 and finally I bought one this week. I was only able to make some shots, about 10 sequences but I'm very DISAPPOINTED. This as nothing to do with the codec used, I can handle it easily with my Quadcore but I can say obviously that the Picture quality is a pity.

It is so bad that i will sell it very quick and return back to my HV20. The picture quality of my HV20 is a lot sharper than the HF-S100. The sensitivity of the new model is really a shame. I have the feeling that the picture is acquired on a 6.000.000 areas but only a third of the pixel is processed (To obtain the full hd frame). The consequence is that the surface used is divided by 3 and the sensitivity is really bad.

I alvays had canon comcorder in the past (Canon MVX2i) and I was delighted with the product but my opinion is that this cam is not made for serous guy, it's a gadget. It takes better picture than the HV20 and they are of pretty equal quality except the increased resolution.

I have the impression that all the reviews have read were not obvious. I just don't undrrstand how Canon made a worse product than 2 years ago and by the way at a such high price.

I would like to heard the same story for others guys because I don't understand how one can be enthousiastic about this can. Maybe a beginner wich has never saw a good video quality such as the HV20.

Any comments highly appreciated. If needed I can post some footage this week-end. Its simply ... not usable compared to HV20.
