Default HG10 HDD - is it replacable?

I know this may not be the right forum for the HG10, but most of the same hacks and DIY projects that are done to the HV20 can be done to the HG10.

    My questions are these:

-Has anyone sucsessfuly replaced the HG10's HDD with another one?
-Is it a standard physical drive size inside the camera? Like laptop drives.
-If (when) you install a new drive, is there a special formatting procedure?

I've searched the forums and the WWW, but cannot find anything.

    Thanks,
    Rex (Ella*Sol Polyphonic)

That is something I have wondered about for a while now too...
I considered this when the price of SSD's came down.

If it worked you'd have a great camera that was not let down by a spinning disc!

Ok, who wants to to try it?

Its probably a 1.8" harddrive like the ones found in iPods, depending on the connection to the harddrive, it could be very feasible to swap out the stock drive for a high capacity compact flash card. For example:
    http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/03/a...most-any-ipod/
Another option could be to replace the stock drive with one of these:

I cant wait till i get my HG10 so i can take it apart and see what the connector is, but thats a few months off yet...
anyway, good luck to anyone who trys this.

Yeah, I did the same thing with my Creative Zen.
I'm just going to wait until my warranty runs out, or I get a different camera before I take this HG10 apart, you know. Perhaps by then, someone else has done it and posted results.

    Thanks for the info.

The Hard Drive is going out on you? That worries me, as I am kinda rough with mine when I travel. What is it doing, making noises? How long have you had it? Is it subject to shock or or other stresses? Like I said, after the warranty runs out, I'll be taking mine apart, but I only bought it in January, so that won't happen until 2010. There has to be someone around who has taken the thing apart somewhere.

Thanks for checking out me thread.

    Default HG10 Disassembled Photos

    Hi all,

I took apart my HG10 a while back, trying to do my own flip hack (which I failed at, and ended up sending to Jehu for a proper job!). Anyways, here are some photos of the hard drive and how I took the sucker apart. Hope it's useful to you!

I took mine on a trip to Italy last summer, knocked it around pretty hard and often (I don't mind getting scratches, as long as I get my shots!). I once dropped it from about a height of 5 feet onto the street, and it came out fine. There's some rubbery material that surrounds the hard drive to keep it relatively safe from drops and bumps (as you can see from my photos above).

Here is the link to Toshiba's site with info on the specific drive: http://www.toshibastorage.com/main.a...ives/MK4009GAL
It is a 1.8" drive with a LIF connector type.

Here is a Google shopping page that shows pricing for an 80 GB version of the same specs: http://www.google.com/products?rlz=1...num=1&ct=title

Not sure if there is any special formatting done to the drive before inserted into the camera.

    Thanks go out to dpante!!!!

Its a year and a couple of months old. What happened was I moved a bunch of files over to my computer. The next day I turned it and I got a red dot it said hard must be initialized. I shut it off turned it back on the same thing happened. I initialized and its fine now but I don't trust it. I cant bring it on a pay job. I called canon and they were very vague but did say they wouldnt trust it either. if I can put a compact flash drive that would rock.

I wonder would it be possible to install a CF or SD reader instead of the HDD?

if you have the adapter then it looks in theory you could put a perm compact flash card in. the questions would be how fast would it have to be and is the os for the cam on the hd or is it on a rom?

To change the hard drive, we need to open 3 screws on the hard drive cover only, the pictures above are for the hack.

Should I dissemble it from 1st point or 2nd point?

    Thanks already.
