OK so it sounds like we really need to get a camera in Rogers hands, finding one on Ebay for a decent price shouldnt be that hard.

I just contacted the person who had this camera for sale on Ebay but didn't sell.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/CANON-HV20-READ-...item27b45a25b5

Hopefully he still has it and will sell it cheap.

I will let you know what I hear.

All of this HV20 stuff is holding up progress. I believe more focus should be on developing more hacks to the hv30 that he already has. This thread has been hijacked wit people talking about how to gt the hacks on the hv20 instead of focusing on what we can do with the hv30.

Not to sound like a jerk but.. you're on a website thats called hv20.com, so your being a little naive by calling us hijackers. Just be patient he'll get a hv20 soon and progress will resume. Heck getting this working on a hv20 IS progress. Just get one from ebay, if needed i'l add to the fund i'm sure a couple of us would.

Can the guy from the thread run the firmware tests with instructions. Camera is failing and would have to go back to service regardless.

Finding the HV20 product code is practically impossible without having the HV20 already available, the only way would be to use a full sd-card emulator, which is incredibly expensive.
The code is made of two bytes, which means there are 65536 combinations to test, something really prohibitive.

The only way I can think of is to use the hidden routine that blindly flashes 4MB onto the TX19A flash; the problem with that routine is that it expects to update the TX19A internal 2MB of flash, which neither the HV20 nor the HV30 have, so the procedure could potentially fail to perform a proper cleanup after flashing.

The other "problem" is that there is no documented way to trigger the hidden flashing routine, so it would need to be an experiment; I think it gets triggered when the camera gets reset (e.g. when you change from record to play or viceversa without turning the camera off), but I actually don't know. I will try something on the HV30 to see if I can discover a reliable way to trigger it.

Seriously we have only one realistic shot at this, if it works then great, if it doesn't I don't know what else to try.

dumping the chips would be the only option. They have individual jtag pins.

Yes indeed, to accomplish that we would need:

    1) a perfectly working HV20 that might need sacrificing to solder the pins
    2) a master soldering iron technician to actually connect wires to the pins
    3) a JTAG expert to write the code to pull the firmware out of the camera

All of these are not easy issues...

Guys, I can prepare the firmware and guide someone to attempt the procedure, it really is russian roulette though, let me know what you want me to do.

I prepared the firmware, funnily enough I cannot make my HV30 take it, I don't know how exactly the procedure works, the only time I managed to make it work was by complete chance many months ago and I forgot how I did that, I seem to remember it involves putting the camera into service mode, but I need to verify that...

The DANGER with someone OTHER than jolly running a HV20 firmware test, is that if the test fails, will we be 100% sure the test failed because of the
HV20 not accepting the HV30 firmware, or possibly instead because of a procedural error in the test itself?

Working in troubleshooting for many years, I strongly recommend against this.
You are introducing too many unforeseen variables.

No, but I've invited the seller to sell it in THIS thread.
Maybe he'll even knock off a few dollars, or ship to wherever jolly is, or whatever.

Well we won't be 100% sure but the guy has a dieing camera anyway. I think it has to run as its essentially the same camera. Getting the camera to take it has been the hard part. If he still has warranty it would be even better as we get a free shot.

free shot at what? Flashing a firmware would surely void any warranty.

I'm pretty sure it would void the warranty...i'm not sure canon released an "official" firmware update, and even if there was one...it wouldn't be the version contained in the Hv.
I DO IT BECAUSE I CAN. I CAN BECAUSE I WANT TO. I WANT TO BECAUSE YOU SAID I COULDN'T.

Not sure if this will help. This HV20 is a 40 minute drive from where I live. I would be happy to check it out. Please let me know.

I received an email back from the seller. He still has the HV20 and has provided me with some options on when and where to meet with him to look at it. I have not been following this thread on a daily basis. Therefore, I am not sure how this is going to work (i.e. $$$). I am willing to look at the camera, inspect it, test it, and front the money for it. However, I need someone (who has the authority) to give me the thumbs up. It sounds like there is more than one person looking at a possible HV20 purchase. I just want to make sure that I don't get stuck with an HV20 (not that it would be a bad thing). I am willing to wait for reimbursement after Jolly receives the camera.

Also, It's about a 40 minute drive. I really don't want to make two trips or risk losing out on a good price.

Here is the response from the seller. I blocked out his phone number. If there is anyone that would like to call to ask questions please PM me for the number.

    My inquiry:

    "Hello,

Do you still have the HV20? If so, can I look at it? I live in the Exeter area.

    Thanks"

    Seller Response:

"Sure. There are two ways, this can be done. I will be in Manchester tomorrow. If you want, you can come and see it there. The address is...

    B&T's Bargain Exchange
    1358A Elm Street
    Manchester, NH 03101

    (603) 622-XXXX

My friend owns this store, and sometimes I help him out with computer issues. That is what I will be doing tomorrow. I will be there from around 11:00 am or so, to 7:00 pm when he closes. That is option one.

Option number two. If Manchester is too far, or you just can't make it during the day. We can meet in Londonderry (where I live) tomorrow night. Tonight is out for two reasons. First, I won't be around, and second the camera is at my friends shop.

Let me know what you want to do, if you want to come here I will send you directions, it's really easy to find. Thanks.

    Jereth"

I wanted to get at least $750.00 for the bundle. Would you consider buying the bundle and reselling the other items?
