Yea, don't know how wine handles direct hardware access. If it works well with other programs that use usb it should be ok. I use a VM of XP when I need to run something that will only work on a 32 bit environment.

You can try vmware or virtualbox. You could even download pre built images from piratebay, etc. It would save you installing and configuring xp.

Well probably best to steer clear of wine / crossover , but Parrallels / VMware fusion should be able to handle usb ports like a real os (not sure about firewire), provided your machine isn't too ancient.

    Hi jollyrogerxp,

have you stared working on the HV20 yet? I am not pusing you, I am just curious, like you said we would see some progress on the HV20 within a month or so.

Thank you very much jollyrogerxp, keep up the AWSOME work!

Jolly doesn't have the hv20 yet, so no progress has been made, check back in mid August for the HV20 updates.

Don't know if this has been posted before - is it possible to apply a similar mod to HV20/30?

I don't have any updates, I am pretty busy with my job now, and it looks like the amount of people still looking for the hacks is relatively low (it is my feeling), so I will wait for next month when I will attempt flashing the HV30 firmware on the HV20, we'll see what happens then...

Well, this is not true. Like herbertsilver, I think there is a lot of people looking for updates of the hacks. It's just that we don't have any technical skill, so we don't say anything. But we're here, we're coming everyday hoping for some little piece of news, cause you already did a great job and we know you can do more.

I'm also interested in the hacks. The Canon I use is an HV20, so I can't use them yet, so I'm looking forward to hearing if any progress can be made for the HV20.

Another silent reader, i come out every few days to keep an eye on progress, i'm not technical enough to help with the hacking, or rich enough to help with the fund or equipment, so mostly i just shut up and stay out of the way :P.

The HV20/30 are great cameras for their price points, incredible given ample light. I think they were mistakes, they usually spend lots of $$$ to make sure they don't give us too much ability without making us pay through the ningnads, but i've been using these cameras mixed with all sorts of high end cameras on multicam shoots, long as i have enough light i can usually match them all close enough after some filtering.

Except that the gain likes to kick in at the worst times, so hoping that can be fixed, along with a few other things like more manual control, but nothing that wasn't listed before... Recording to SD card would be **really** grand, but probably far fetched.

Such a small thing technically to add for a big strong company like canon, they already do it for AVCHD..

Well, I don't know what to say except thanks for your support!

As soon as I get the HV20 in less than a month I will try to flash it with the HV30 firmware, if it works then it's going to be very nice!

In the mean time, as I asked before, it would be great if one of the moderators could somehow help people to prioritize the list of requests, as I cannot do everything, especially not everything at once...

    Cheers!

I think that is a valid request, the thing is, I don't think the Mods really know what your capabilities are. It might be easier for you to give some suggestions on what you think could actually be realistically done rather than try to work on things that just aren't possible like record to SD card or something, assuming that's not really possible.

I can only speak for myself when I say this but I think there is a lot of demand for full manual control and LCD flipping which you have already done.

    Just my $.02

Thanks again for all your hard work on this Roger!

    Hello,
congratulations for the good job. I was following this thread with interest.
    But I have one question.
I have a NTSC HV30, if I hack it can I then shoot in 25P and still capture my old tapes at 30P or have I change the regio back every time?

Sometimes I want video a wedding or party and make a PAL DVD from this footage. In my experience you can better shoot in this case with a framerate which is compliant with PAL.

    thanks in Advance

I only can repeat myself: FULL MANUAL CONTROL is the most important feature set on every camera. Every serious filmmaker wants to have full control over shutter, aperture and gain.

With the HVxx it's possible to set the shutter OR the aperture and you only can control gain with the "photo button trick". While setting the shutter you can lock the aperture, but it's a relative value, not an absolute f-stop. And that's a real problem as it makes filming slow and cumbersome. I hate filming this way.

I want to set the shutter to e.g. 1/50 and the aperture to e.g. 2.4 and I want to lock gain to e.g. 0 db. And I want to do that with absolute values and fast.

I couldn't imagine another feature that should be more important than that.
    But: How about a poll?

And above all this: Thanks Jolly for your effort!
