ether way, i think this should be a first thing or step so we can have something to work with, and then in the meantime they can progress to the big one, full manual control of exposure and etc.
can this be a nice request?
I think we're going to have to let them get on with it and discover what does what as and when they stumble across a change they can identify.
I'd like to make requests too, like a histogram on video record mode amongst other things, but we'll all have to wait for them to figure it out.
The real first thing should be encourage every member of this board to give some cash to these people, as they are the ones doing all the work, and taking the risk with their own equipment.
As I said before, imagine how fast this would be done if we could offer the first person to crack it $18,000? Not unfeasable with the amount of users on this board...
Yes, but it does help when capturing from tape to be able to preview the footage correctly oriented before capturing, especially when perusing footage for facial expression. Since I use a MacBook, I just flip it over and hold it on my lap, but that's not so convenient for desktop monitor users.
I've got the flip hack so I don't have to worry about it while filming...![]()
But after reading everyones posts, I see how overall, it would be a nice option.
I'm using this prism finder now. Also here. I really like it for focusing, even though it masks off a couple mm on either side of the HV30 LCD (I have to remember to pan left and right before recording to estimate what will be in frame.).
The angle that the LCD is at will flip the image vertically, so I need to do the flip hack to be able to use this finder in all positions.
doesnt a prism contribute to more light loss?![]()
Ok, lets get back on topic.
You're right. We wasted a whole page discussing the merits of one hack wish list item.
Maybe I missed the whole point of this thread, but somewhere along the way somebody mentioned that it might be possible to simply take the HV30 firmware and load it to an HV20.
If the HV30 was simply a firmware upgrade to HV20, I can see how this would be possible. Has anyone tried this? That's the main reason I was interested in this hack and why I donated money.
You missed the main point. The goal is to have full manual control...among other things.
But, I'm sure (if and when this is achieved) we'll get 30p, which is the only difference in the hv20/30 firmware. Cross your fingers for true 24p which the 'new" hv40 will support.
True dat,
I think it would be good to make a baseline to start from. I've heard a lot of ideas thrown around, some of which will be complicated to implement if it has to be done by reverse engineering firmware.
Perhaps there should be a few different drops, or milestones if you will. Perhaps the first drop is simply an image that can be loaded to an HV20 which provides all the features of HV30. That would be huge.
I can't say what the drops should be because I use my video camera like a consumer (point and shoot), but a clear roadmap would be great.
It might be good if we came up with a number of features than had to be reached in order to receive the prizefund. Although it isn't a huge amount at the moment, considering the amount of work that would go into the reverse engineering the firmware, but we should have a set list of features so there aren't aggravations when someone (from here or CHDK) thinks they have added enough features and feels entitled to it. (Although this is unlikely.)
Manual control over Aperture, Shutter Speed and Gain would be the bare minimum I guess?
All other features aside for the moment I reckon with this we'd all be alot happier, from there it's an open market for them, or other, code genius's to provide more features...
- As noted earlier (i think) native 24p.
- Also...a snapshot of a histogram would be excellent (the same one that appears after you take a still image). It does not have to be "live" (though that would be nice)...but just a snapshot.
- I can do without 30p...but some folks may like that.

I could be wrong, but i thought it wasnt possible to shoot true 24p to tape with current codecs.
and added to my wishlist would be true 24p to the HG10![]()
I think that manual gain shutter and aperture would be much more feasible to accomplish than native 24p and histograms. And if the prize fund was only available to those who completed histograms etc... i don't think many of the developers would see it as much of an incentive due to the time it would take to develop these features.
They would be nice features to have, but making them requirements for the prize might damage the success of the firmware mod. ATM i think there should be a prize to the first person who releases a mod which allows shutter, aperture and gain control. Since these are, somewhat, simply modifications of current features and not completely new additions. I'm just throwing out ideas, what do other people think about this?
All these extra features would be lovely, but you and I are definately in agreement about the basics needed for the prize...
I mean, with this people would be able to do so much!
Out of interest, can anyone chime in on how feasible they think it would be to port it over to other cams? e.g. the HG10, HF10 etc...
The thing is I'm not asking for anything that the cam can't already do. The cam already displays a histogram when you take a photo (it shows a snapshot of it). We already use the photo button (halfway pressed) to check our shutter and F-stop. There is nothing wrong with having the ability to continue using the button to check the histogram right after you set your (hacked) shutter and aperture. It seems like it should just be a firmware tweak. Also, it was always the desire (from day one over a year ago) for the hack to try and produce native 24p. So I am not suggesting anything out of the ordinary.

Just wanted to put it out there that I, though silent, am watching developments with interest. I'm just waiting for PayPal and my bank to make friendly and i'll kick down a few bean$ of encouragement! I'd love to give more l8r too! I'm super-stoked that you guys are on this!Nerds! ;D
Rock on my friends!
