    Default HV20/30 Quick Reference Card

I was asked recently by a multiple-HV-owning friend if I knew of a quick reference card to introduce experienced shooters new to the HVx0 the camera's capabilities, limitations and favored settings and work-arounds. Unable to find one that really fit the bill, I put this together.

I hasten to acknowledge that most of the "hard data" is brazenly lifted from the work of others (I believe the diagram was first brought to my attention by Aramis, and many of the figures are from hit-and-run poster Eddy Grabczewski's website). I post it here not only in the hope others may find it helpful, but especially to elicit comments and critiques from the HV community. What have I overlooked, gotten wrong, or stated confusingly?

The .zip attachment contains nothing but a 34KB MS Word .doc version of the copypasta below (since the forum limits .doc attachments to 19.5K). Frame rates and shutter speeds will differ for PAL cameras. Enjoy.

    HV20/30 QUICK REFERENCE CARD

First, read the Instruction Manual. Even if you skim the rest, slow down and read pp.45-52.

RECOMMENDED BASIC SETTINGS FOR NORMAL SHOOTING

IMAGE EFFECT: NEUTRAL, LOW SHARPENING, SOFT SKIN DETAIL or CUSTOM with most values lowered from their defaults are preferable to NONE or VIVID.

    AUTO-FOCUS: Normal (through the lens)

DIGITAL ZOOM: OFF ZOOM SPEED: VARIABLE

ASSIST FUNCTION: ZEBRA 100% (only deliberately overexposed areas such as bright lights or reflections should show zebras)

HDV 60i or HDV PF24: As dictated by project. SD modes are not recommended.

For shallowest depth of field, the camera should be placed far from the subject and zoomed in while using the widest possible aperture. In bright conditions ND filters or variable polarizers may be used to lower exposure. However underexposure must be avoided because the camera may add as much as 27dB of gain and/or drop to 360° shutter with no indication given to the operator. Similarly in bright conditions an internal variable ND filter is added automatically which holds the aperture at f/5.6 for 11 clicks of exposure adjustment. The HV loves light and requires at least 55 footcandles/600 lux (1000 watts tungsten at 12 feet) to achieve f/1.8 0dB gain.

    SEMI-AUTOMATIC SHOOTING

CINE mode is preferred because it allows IMAGE EFFECT and WHITE BALANCE to be set and because it flattens contrast and preserves more highlight and shadow detail than other modes. However because it will raise shutter speed above f/8 and may add gain or drop to half shutter in low light, checking and locking exposure is required when using CINE mode in very bright or low light or when wide apertures are desired. Set light meters at ISO 100.

The following modes never add gain, but disable manual IMAGE EFFECT and WB settings and may drop to slow shutter: SUNSET, SPOTLIGHT and PORTRAIT modes.

    (MOSTLY) MANUAL SHOOTING

Set Exposure program to “Tv.” Select shutter speed (180° shutter = 1/60th for HDV 60i, 1/48th for HDV PF24). Press FOCUS to select manual focus (MF appears on screen). Press FOCUS ASSIST in REC/PAUSE mode to magnify center of picture (cancels on recording). Preset or custom WB and IMAGE EFFECT may be used. Set light meters at ISO 80.

    LOCKING EXPOSURE

Note that the HVx0 has no “exposure compensation” mode; exposure either remains locked where set or adjusts automatically. Likewise gain cannot be discovered or controlled directly: operators must verify that the camera adds no gain with either of the following procedures. Gain is never added except at f/2.8 and below. (See table 1).

Table 1 Available apertures with possible gain indicated in red.

    TRY TRY AGAIN METHOD

Camera must be equipped with a MiniSD card. Zoom to desired framing. Half-press PHOTO button, f/stop and shutter speed are briefly displayed on screen. Lock exposure (press SET, scroll DOWN to EXP, scroll UP and press SET to select, scroll LEFT/RIGHT to adjust). Half-press PHOTO button again. Below f/3.2, if exposure increases (picture gets brighter) but f/stop stays the same, gain is being added. No more than one “click” of gain (approximately 7dB) is recommended, with none being preferable. Press SET again to lock (blue exposure bar remains onscreen).

    EXPOSURE TARGET (CELL PHONE) METHOD

Alternately, fill the frame with a source known to produce an exposure where the rightmost click of available adjustment (+11) is WFO f/1.8 with 0 gain (such as a blank cell-phone text message screen or sheet of paper held about six inches from the lens illuminated by the camera’s onboard LED light), lock exposure and adjust. Half-press PHOTO button to verify f/stop and shutter speed. Press SET again to lock (blue exposure bar remains onscreen).

I formatted the quick reference card to print on one page in case anyone else is like me and likes it that way...done in open office and saved as a .doc so I hope it looks fine in word.

Does this all apply to the HV40 as well? Thanks.

The HV40 is basically the same thing as the HV30 with Native 24p, so yes it applies.
I DO IT BECAUSE I CAN. I CAN BECAUSE I WANT TO. I WANT TO BECAUSE YOU SAID I COULDN'T.

What exactly is "exposure" doing to the camera when you adjust it? The aperture and shutter speed don't change, so what exactly is it doing to change exposure? And this is different than gain, right, since you said you can't adjust gain manually?

Ok, I messed around with it more and see that it does in fact change the aperture.

"The following modes never add gain, but disable manual IMAGE EFFECT and WB settings and may drop to slow shutter: SUNSET, SPOTLIGHT and PORTRAIT modes."

Portrait mode adds gain in my experience. Spotlight is clean but requires a shitload of light. Sunset adds no gain but is too saturated for my liking.
