    Default RED 28k sensor... Incredible

    On RED's website http://www.red.com/epic_scarlet/

The optional Epic 617 pro sensor boasts a 28k resolution at 30 fps, incredible.
If you go down the page, you will thee that the sensor is HUGE, and is about
    6.7 x 2.5 inches! I WANT this camera!
Picture quality is probably so detailed that you can't even see the full resolution with your own eyes.

    I was exaggerating
Although the 28k sensor has been mentioned before, I would like to speculate some more about it, any thoughts?

I thought you were referencing Jim Jannard's statement that the RED 617 will have more photosites (261,352,000) than all the rods and cones in both your eyes (126,000,000 x 2 eyes = 252,000,000).

I thought it was KMART that had an exclusive deal with RED to carry their lineup in stores.

No. They have the BLUE light special. But target is pretty red. I bet Target carries the Red line.

I stand corrected, although it was to my understanding that Target narrowly beat out Circuit City.

I can't imagine (yet) what anyone would need this kind of resolution for. If I'm not mistaken, its almost 3x IMAX resolution.

What type of computer would you need to process the footage?
Would an Intel Celeron do the job?

You should be able to process it on any computer. Now if you wanted your computer to take less than a year to process an hours worth of shots.....

Where would you need it? If you wanted some detailed roadside billboards, or movie posters. Or one of those scientists types that needed a lot of digital zoom in post. Or if you were someone with one of those building size grids of HD displays and wanted to make every pixel count.

This stuff is really great news for those with no interest in buying a Red because hopefully soon 35mm full frame CMOS chips will become standard in cameras.

    I hope very soon.

Why would we care? I mean people on HV20.com? Obviously none of us are doing anything that is worthy of 28K

    Obviously.

(You know, I believe there was a story that when Steve Jobs was trying to raise money for his little business which at the time was still in his garage most of the people said: "now why the hell would anyone need a 'personal' computer...")

The same reason we talk about the RED or anything above $4000 in the first place. I'm going to assume that 90% of us, at least, cannot afford anything over $4000. But it's cool too talk about and see what other people who can actually afford them (on this forum or not) are doing with great technology...

...and the tiny hope that one day we also will be the ones playing with the new technology. We need to well informed if we are to be so lucky.

I also believe Xerox handed their projects over to Bill Gates because they thought it was worthless, they are twisting their arm now in regret.

I can actually imagine someone buying one of these & just doing those tests in their garden with music over it.

Actually, Xerox PARC showed Steve Jobs and Co. around all of their cool technologies including the GUI interface and mouse. The upper management at Xerox had no idea how to implement said technologies ("we make copiers, no computers"). Steve Jobs & Apple had no trouble with that, obviously.

If you ever want to see a goofy, kind of fun movie about those events (and the start of the personal computer), track down the movie "Pirates of Silicon Valley": [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Pirates-Silicon-Valley-Noah-Wyle/dp/0780627717"]Amazon.com: Pirates of Silicon Valley[/ame] [/GEEK]
