Cup Of Beach- ( D90 footage )

This was shot with a Nikon D90 at Fort Lauderdale Beach.
I had just previously shot a similar film ( also on vimeo ) called The Edge Of The World, with an HV20 and Letus Mini.
I was extremely excited and interested in seeing the same type of film done with my new Nikon. Well, it sure is clearer, brighter, more crisp, and livelier. The HV20 and Letus set up seems a lot more textured even with no color grading, which I did zero with either film. I think I like the Nikon better over-all, especially with how much more user friendly it is!!. No vignetting, or grain to worry about was an absolute step in the right direction, and it isn't that hard to control the exposure.
It was extraordinary to be able to snap of shots in the middle of recording, and the pictures it takes are phenomenal. I didn't have any problem with rolling shutter since I'm very used to working steadily with camera movements.
Finally, the sharpness at infinity and beyond is spectacular. Look at the buildings far off in some of the shots and you'll see. I could never achieve that with my HV20 letus combo. Not in a million years, and I'm just beginning to learn the Nikon!
So tell me what you think of the film, maybe you can watch the other one done with the HV20 Letus too, and I'd love to hear feedback on how you are liking your Nikon if you have one. I'm liking mine a lot.

Nice! It looks like the compression is a little off (maybe just my monitor right now), but I can definitely see how the sensor size and setup is superior to an HV w/ adapter. I can still see a great difference between the D90 and the 5D MII, even on Vimeo (I can usually tell the difference before knowing), but the difference between a D90 and an Hv30 is almost indistinguishable with a wide DOF.

I almost think the biggest difference in the images is when the cameras are NOT in focus, oddly enough. The D90 seems to display more fringing and grain compared to the 5D's clear blur with strong colours on objects out of focus.

The frame rate stuttered alot. Maybe compression settings? But the DOF was nice. You sounded really happy with the D90.

Also are you able to snap pictures while recording video, without interrupting the video?

And is your letus rig going to collect dust?

I don't know about the frame rate. I didn't change it from 24p to anything. Its got to be vimeo because it doesn't stutter on the downloadable, I think. I literally have 1 day experience with the D90 so I'm going to take baby steps. Its hard to tell how much I'll use the Letus until I get enough footage to look over from the D90. I don't think anybody has found a way to get 1/48th shutter speed consistently on the camera yet, but it's low light footage doesn't get very grainy in about any circumstances (if you compare to the Letus setup ).
I'm very,very happy I bought the D90 instead of the 5D, since they are both sort of beta versions. One thing about the D90 is that it has a zoom in option for focusing, but it isn't all that great really compared to what the 5Ds can do.
I guess I'll have to just be patient and see what I can get out of the camera for a while before I determine if I can do a serious indie film with it. Oh, it would be nice though and I could use 1/8th the wattage in lighting!!

Having seen your last short film, I think it's safe to say you could definitely make a good indie with the D90. And btw, forgot to mention that I was impressed and surprised by the slow-mo in your video - I didn't think it could be so smooth at 24p.

With zoom, do you mean the 5D won't do it in video, or that it won't show a zoomed-in focus-screen for dead-on focus?

You can use the zoom lens with no problem. But there is a function button that digitally zooms in on whatever you are about to shoot. You can zoom in a lot, but its doesn't have good enough resolution to accurately see perfectly if you are in tack sharp focus. It gives you a very good idea, and it is better than nothing. I slowed those slow motion clips down to 50%.

I like your d90 short, I like both flicks, but the d90 has more color and brightness. My first reaction was maybe its a little over exposed but last night I fired up my d90 for the first time and realized how much more light gets to the sensor than with my letus rig. Plus there is only one focus to worry about. With the letus rig there is two focuses to get right. I tried Matt's "Descaler" it works great. It completely removes the stair-stepping which improves are the edges. I do like the softness of the d90.

I know I asked already, but how do I get, use, his descaler program?
I know what you mean about the brightness. It is very clear compared to the other way with adaptors. I think a lot of my film was overexposed though. My wife is a pro photog and I asked her what she thought about it, and she said it looked overexposed to her.
Its just a matter of getting used to the LCD screen and locking exposure better.

How do you use it? Do you put the filter on the clip or do you have to superimpose it over a copy, or what?

I just apply the filter to the clip. The video line will turn red that it needs to be rendered, that's it.

Nice night shots in your latest short. What lens did you use?

Does the D90 have full manual control in video mode Aperture,shutterspeed,ISO?

No. It doesn't. You can get exposure locked where you need it though. ND filters can get your shutter speed down to a good speed if its bright. In a few months the D90 will be mastered by people and hopefully we'll find more control.

The kit lens. I did another one tonight, and this time I controlled the aperture, and exposure instead of just letting the camera do its thing. I'm probably going to delete the first night film since it was a test to see how the camera acts on its own.
I'll put the new one up in the next couple of days and it should be an improvement.
I think the stuttering is Vimeo. Every time I play it, it stutters in different spots than before.
But I also leave the file at 24p without converting to 23.976 or whatever. I haven't heard about that being a problem yet.
