Thread: Video project idea...what do you think?

Default Video project idea...what do you think?

I was thinking the other day about what sort of short film project I want to set up, and I thought it would be cool if members of the forum would create a documentary about themselves. I'm in the process of jotting down some notes on myself that might be interesting enough to talk about, but basically we would record info about the city we live in, what we like to do in our spare time....I dunno, just different things that others might find interesting. It would give other members the opportunity to get to know you and see what you're about. If enough people want to participate I'll definitely jump in and start taping mine this weekend. Think it'll fly?

Will it be a feature length (2 hour) film?

120 min. of 120 members would be 1 min. each.
240 members would be 30 sec.
480 members would be 15 sec.

Participation needs to be established before you can set time limits.

A DVD with chapters for each member would be nice.

I was thinking each person's video could be about 8-10 minutes long. That should be more than enough to tell a nice short story about who you are and what you're about. Then, rather than putting it on a DVD we can link it in our signatures, or maybe in a sticky thread with "member documentary" or something to that effect as the topic. I'm open to ideas but I think it would be cool to learn a bit more about members on the forum in a fun way that makes us use our gear.

I'm moving so my place is a mess and I'm more or less sleeping on the ground. Do you really want to see that?

You can leave that part out, but being in Berlin, you could record some in your city, talk about your experiences in certain places, things like that. For example, I might not record but a few minutes of footage in my home, but I would record places around town that I like to go. Things like that.

Maybe I should set the example and make a sample video for everyone to see?

I just had to make a documentary on myself and a hobby I have so I did it on glassblowing. I suppose I could upload it, although I hate hearing myself talk

I would say put it up. I'm writing down the details of what I want to cover and talk about. I'm a bit under the weather right now though so I probably won't start recording until next week.

I like the idea of creating a sticky thread for a project like this. It would be nice if the thread only had 1 post per documentary per person, so to keep it condensed. Perhaps the thread could be titled autobiographical-documentaries.

I agree that the videos around 10 minutes or less seem appropriate for this project. The documentaries could be anything from showing a little bit of any of the following your comfortable with showing: your domicile, neighborhood, city, hobby, yourself, family, etc. If there are some budding actors out there, they could incorporate a short audition showing what they got. I'd like to see it have no time limit on when to complete a video but have it a continuing process of building a library of autobiographies of our members. If once you posted a video for this project, you wanted to replace it with a new one, you could PM a moderator or administrator to edit a new link for you since there is a time limit on how long you have to edit your own posts. This would give some flexibility but not let someone have multiple videos posted in this special thread.

The question would be, where is the best place for hosting the files. I would say that there shouldn't be any restrictions on format of the files. Let everyone determine which works best for themselves. I think everyone who participates would want to create the best that they could but I personally wouldn't want it to be a contest for the best documentary so that beginners to the more advanced videographers would feel at ease in working on such a project.

J Inwood: Ditto. I think a lot of us are shy in front of the camera or microphone. But we have the power in making this video to keep ourselves off or on the camera however much we want. Be creative when it comes to being shy about it. I say as soon as we decide on a location for the videos, go ahead and post it and the link to it here until we figure out if there is enough interest to warrant creating a sticky for this project in the "footage" forum.

If anyone is interested, here's a home movie I put together from last summer. It's a mix of HDV, SD and stills. My wife and I own our own private island on a lake about an hour from my nation's capital. This will give you an idea of what I'm about and what is near and dear to me.

Video Frank - You put a whole new wrinkle into viewing videos here on this forum. I didn't know you could do that and I'm not sure how you did. If your post with embeded video from another domain is legit here, that might be a nice way to go for this project using a sticky thread in the "footage" forum.

By the way, I have found the best way to view video on the Vimeo site when one has a slow ramp like I do where I work, is to hit the play icon and than immediately hit the pause icon and let the buffer bar load the whole video before hitting the play icon again.

Edit: Just watched the video. That was great. It took me back twenty years or so when my kids were that age. I have some old video of them jumping off rope swings down on the river. That video will be treasured by you family years down the road.

Right on. That was exactly what I had in mind. It would be cool to see what everyone looks like and what it is everyone is about. There may be members on here that share similar interests outside of camcorders and videography and this is a fun way to share that.

Well, I guess I better read that thread. That's a fantastic way to post/host videos here on this forum. I may even use that method for my website.
