Farewell Fair - Letus 35 mm. adaptor w/various lenses

Hey guys,
This film, was shot with an HV20, Letus, various lenses, at the Broward County Fair. I've done a couple of carnival videos now. My other vimeo carnival video was shot without the Letus because I was documenting my children and didn't have the time to fiddle with it.
I've become fascinated with carnivals for a few exciting reasons. I'm beginning a project with some carnivals that I cant wait to show you. Its going to be very interesting.
I don't want to tell any more about it because the idea "could" get stolen. Probably not, but I'd rather be safe.
Anyhow, I met some interesting (to say the least) people with the carnival, and set a few things up!!. But this is a film just getting some shots that may or may not be used as inserts in parts of the project. Let me know what you think of the little film. I tried for a different aspect ratio, if I did it right. I've never tried it before so I did it in a really strange way probably.

By the way, can anybody confirm that there is some jittery motion. I shot it in 60i so I have no idea why there seems to be.

Yes - there's a jitter in some shots. It happens to me sometimes when shooting using a tripod from either dirt, gravel, sand, etc (something less than firm). The vibration of the letus can sometimes make the lens jitter which obvious projects onto the ground glass. frustrating.

You are talking about the studdery motion right, not the wobble?

I'm talking about what i would describe as a wobble. maybe we're addressing different things.

I'm talking about studdery motion. Do you see studdery motion. Not wobble. I see a little of that too, and yeah, it was caused by vibrations. The motion isn't fluid when I view it, it is jerky, even the original file, and I was wondering if you see it, or if there is something going on at my end over here.

Ok - i see what you're talking about. It's easier to detect on the shots of the roller coaster. You're seeing it on your original footage? Odd. I haven't shot 60i with a letus yet, but it shouldn't matter as you would probably agree. weird. Did you use a preset for 24p outputting when you should have used a 30p?

No. I'm sort of concerned. It shouldn't do this. All I did was de-interlace. It doesn't jitter in the time line, but it does jitter on my exported movie file. Hmm.

I see the jerky motion too, it's slightly distracting.

Not a bad video but it feels very cropped and with it being all static shots it get a little boring. The footage may have worked better if it was a bit sharper and brighter.

I agree M83. The jerkiness is distracting. I'm going to have to figure this out, unfortunately I'm in the middle of rendering, and exporting a wedding video job I just did, so I'm a little anxious about getting back to this video and figuring out the source.
Its the first video that I cropped to 2:35:1 ( I think it is? ). I like it a lot but I usually go 16:9 for the more opened up look. I'm trying out some different things to learn more.
The static shots is standard fare for me when I shoot with the Letus unless it's a very prepared film. It's too hard to run and gun, and pull focus etc..... I like static stuff and moving. They are 2 different feels, but I think I lean towards the static Letus stuff when I do more journalistic video like these.

I exported it at 8000 kbs. I'm going to try and export it at 5000 kbs and see what happens. So, I'm going to take down the video and re upload it later....if it plays better.

RE: The aspect ratio. The fact that someone is viewing it on Vimeo has a great effect on their perception simply because a 16:9 is the status quo there. I'm sure it looks a lot better in your aspect ratio when viewed on your home pc or tv.

I hope you know what I mean, it makes sense to me anyway!

I know what you mean. This new aspect ratio I'm using seems to be gaining some popularity on Vimeo lately so I'm jumping on the band-wagon just so I can say I know how to do it. I probably took the long way though.

OKAY. THE VIDEO IS UP AGAIN. I did some minor c/c changes and I like it MUCH better. The studderring motion is 95% better. I think its a Quicktime bug in their lates version, which I'll have to look into.

So much easier to watch now without those annoying white bars that were on the last one. Color correcting is much better this time around as well! I still notice a good bit of jitter, especially at around 40 seconds.

I tend to favor your videos without the adaptEr though, the Letus is just making the image too soft and in a lot of the shots it seems that nothing is in focus. On the other hand there were a few shots that felt very cinematic so congratualtions on that.

Thanks Inwood. I still don't understand the jitter. I've shot a ton of things before and I never had this problem until I got the latest installment of Quick-time. In those shots where nothing seems to be in focus, its my bad habit of using those shots. There actually is something in focus there, but not what sticks out enough to merit me using. For instance in a few of those shots I used a 210 mm. lens Xs 2, and set the focus to around half of the distance of the length of the carnival path, and the people that were in focus were obscured by people closer to the camera. Those shots are pretty useless, unless you get a quick glance at the folks way off in the distance " somewhere " that are in focus. I tend not to worry as much as other people about it because I don't mind that look, but I need to learn quicker NOT to use those kinds of shots a lot. People always give me crap about them. There are a lot of those shots in this video so I'll probably pay the price.
AND, a few of the shots are soft because of other variables ofcourse when you consider the demands of shooting at a carnival and capturing a lot of footage. People are always moving, and rides too. My impatience , and a lack of a good monitor was always going to be the problem. I'm getting there though, slowly....
The adaptor is my favorite way to film, but sometimes the bare HV20 is the way to go, especially when you are trying to get a lot of footage, with little time. This video was right on the edge of that decision, but I wanted to capture maybe a few inserts for a project coming up!!! I got a few inserts out of it I think.
