Thread: Differences between HV20 & HV30

  1. #1

    Question Differences between HV20 & HV30

I'm on a limited budget, and I'm trying to decide between buying the HV20 for cheaper and possibly losing some significant features of the HV30, or paying more for the HV30 and getting more features.

So are there any significant features that are included with the HV30 that are not in the HV20? If so, do you think they're worth the extra cash. I know the prices are not that different, but as I said before, my budget is very limited.

    Thanks!

    What is "significant" for you?

There are very few differences, 30P mode in the NTSC model (if you need/want it), black body and a brighter display (also has slightly better display viewing angles) are the major differences.

I rarely see the HV20's priced much less (than HV30's) specifically because they are so close.

Also, the HV30 has a better zoom toggle than the hv20.

    The HV30 is BLACK!

Ah yes, so true.... because the black body looks maavalous, and when you rook maavolous you feel maavilous.

    My HV20 just feels so...

So the only things pal users get are: new zoom toggle, a better display (and of course the nice color )

the hv30 is available in both NTSC and PAL, atnas.

I would go HV30, the price dropped so drastically in the last couple weeks that I'm thinking of picking up another one.

They get 25P. I really wish I was one of "they". I live in the UK, but I bought a NTSC version to save a few bob. The seller told me it could do PAL aswell. It can't. At least it ssems to work on my TV OK.

As a person who has had both I would say go for the 30. The screen on the 20 was pretty bad in my opinion and I had trouble judging exposure with it, especially outside. The vixia screen is way better. Also the zoom toggle on the 20 was annoying to me, the little flat tab, the 30's improved zoom toggle is easier to do smooth zooms, although a true zoom rocker would be way better.

hi, i don't know where you buy, but on ebay there are a shop that sell ntsc hv30 and lie to tell that you can use like pal, the cam is different.
my great friend waste is money with them.
buy pal version, if you think to work in ntsc mode, then change frame rate or other workaround i can tell you that is an hell way.

    i had hv20, know i have hv30.
only for better display i tell you, buy hv30

An opposing opinion. Had an HV20. It broke, so now I have an HV30. I don't find them functionally different at all. The zoom toggle, screen, and 30P make no difference to me.

Some may be joking about the colour difference, but I do notice that people think the black HV30 looks like a pro cam when I have my black Raynox wide angle adapter, my black Cokin filter holder and shade, and my Video Innovators handle on it. I actually had a pro walk up to me and ask me what the camera was because he thought it was some kind of mini pro camera. Go figure.

Anyway, if you want to look more pro (if you want to shoot paid gigs), then you might actually consider black important.

Curious: over the long haul, does that really matter to the client? (I'm not busting your chops ) I mean the "looking pro" part, the color of the cam, etc.? I've done paid gigs with my HV20 already, and when I began in photography I billed myself as a professional and shot with a Canon PowerShot A10. (Funny, that camera costs more NOW than when I purchased it years ago!)

The HV30, I believe, also comes with a hinge for the hot shoe cover.

    Alright thank you all.
After much thought, I went with the HV30.

...wait a minute...where were you going to buy the 20 for, and at what price? Ditto the 30...?

I was going to buy it off ebay for about $400-$450. But I ended up going with the 30 for $550 on B&H.

Aah. OK, I see. Well, that kinda changes the depth of the original question...the 20 may have been pre-owned. In that case, you still made the best decision IMO.

By me, with instruction from this thread. The Videomic is next to impossible to attach with that cover still clinging on for dear life.

    LOL

Took forever to get to the resolution, but my plan was either to do that or just give it one swift yank. I didn't get my 30 yet, but I'm probably going to boom the mic most of the time anyway, but for the times when I don't...off that critter goes.

if i remember correctly hv20 ntsc use 24p obtained from a pulldown 3:2 of 30 frame, which is not a good thing, i reed that many people bought hv20 pal version to have a real progressive.

    i had hv20 pal, and now hv30.
i'm honest, change it only for display, i often shoot in complex situation where i not rotate enought the display to have it perpendicular at my eyes, and difference from hv20 is great.
color is not important, but usability is very important.

hv30 ntsc also have a real 30p progressive without pulldown.

my 2 cent is hv20 or hv30 is not a big difference, but buy pal version. trust me.
