Default Canon HG 20 PAL vs NTSC

I bought the Canon HG20 in Europe but I wasn't aware of the fact that it does 25p while the American version does 24p and 30p.

After researching a bit I have found out that 25p is better than 24p but didn't really understood why. Just know that it doesn't have the problem of 3:2 pulldown. I am still missing 30p though and wonder if I should return this and get an American Canon HG20 instead.

From what I have understood that 30p is helpful when it comes to fast scenes or lots of movements involved. Do I really need this function or 25p is enough really?

I have noticed that when I connect the cam to PS3 and try to view the video on my TV. The TV detects it as 1080i. I bought this camera in order to get 1080p and wonder if this has to do something with PS3?

Canon Europe support has told me that Canon HV30 can record in 1080p while Canon HG20 can't. I don't understand how when HDV tapes at best can only achieve 1080i.

The important question is though: Which one is better American or European Canon HG20 and does it record in 1080p?

    This is up to you.

Because video is recorded as 1080i.

All Canon AVCHD camcorders along with the HV20/HV30 record video as interlaced. It is possible to record native progressive HDV though.

This is up to you to decide.

What I was wondering is if there is a big advantage in 30p. Doesnt anyone have two samples where I can see the difference in 24p/25p and 30p. I dont know how much you gain from 30p. Is it such a big difference that I should consider returning it and get an American version.

Doesn't 1080/24P means that it records on 1080p with 24hz? Doesn't the full HD means that it does record on 1080p? The understanding I had was that HDV tape can't record in 1080p but HG20 compression can or did I misunderstood that.

It is "fake" 1080i. Both of the fields are the same, so the 50i recorded looks like 25p and the 60i recorded looks like 30p. 24p is a little more complicated, because it is also recorded as 60i and you have to remove the extra frames that don't have matching frames.

To me it is much smoother than 24p.

    Look around.

    Shoots 24p, records 60i with 2:3 pulldown.

Full HD is not a technical term.

HDV spec has provisions for native 1080p recording, some Canon and Sony cameras do that.

    Isn't the blueray spec 24p?

The dvd specification is 29.97 fps. For NTSC anyway. My cybershot does 25fps and when converted to NTSC-DVD it's noticeable as the cars moving in the background jump a lot.

Your call. Is your player / display PAL based? That might explain why it looks better.

You are on teh right track but this isn't 100% correct. The fields are not identical. It's is a progressive frame were encoded in interlaced fields. Which is to say, each subsequent line in the image is unique, as it would be in a progressive frame. It just happens that the lines are recorded to disk alternately. The scheme is known as 2:2 pulldown.

I have bought a display in Europe but it has 24p mode. I wonder if I should convert it to 24p afterwards or will the TV play it as 25p? I have a pioneer PDP-LX5090 plasma.

I thought there was one standard when it came to HD. I know that there used to be ntsc and pal with different specifications. But is there only a difference in hz or? If there is a difference then why do they sell TVs here with 24p instead of 25p. Can I play this 25p material using 24p on my television with out converting it to 24p?

Is there any consumer camcorder which can record in 1080p?

Operator's manual from your TV would be a good place to start. Not all TVs and DVD players sold in the U.S. support 50Hz video.
