Default The hardest part of filmmaking...

is coming up with good ideas. Anyone agree? I mean there are books on screenwriting, cinematography, editing and such to learn from but getting an idea seems to be the hardest part. I mean unless I'm the only one on earth without the great book of ideas.

You are so right. Once I got my HV30, I ran out of ideas. That's why I've been putting more focus on my rig lately, because without ideas, I have nothing to do, so why not work on the rig so that when you get a good idea, you can make it the best it can possibly be.

Whenever I get a good idea, I treat it like a precious jewel. I finally got a good idea today so I can't wait to work on it!

I disagree, the hardest part of filmmaking for me is the fundraising and marketing. Getting money for a film is difficult, and takes a lot of work. Marketing a film is something i have yet to be successful with. Not necessarily selling the film, because the money isn't my main focus, but getting the film out there for people to see can be a daunting task.

I find it easier to work with a team, delegate tasks among eachother. Doing everything yourself is the easy road to catastrophe. Find yourself a friend who likes to write and who you can work with to give life to your vision and ideas.

@Padawan: Yeah i was so excited to get my camera, but me and my friends have been struggling for ideas. I'm trying to build an aluminum rails shoulder mount, but i haven't been able to get to home depot. lol.

@koolpeguin: I agree with you, except that a good idea goes hand in hand with selling your idea to raise money. You need a good one to get more money. however i have only produced films out of my own pocket, so i have yet to experience the thrills and joys of money hunting.

@Jedeyez: My friend that goes to FSU just bought a XH-A1 and a Letus, plus he's the best writer out of us all, so we're hoping to collaborate with him when he comes down soon.

I was going to do the exact same thing, but I ended up just buying this to save from the trouble of DIY and to have something reliable, comfortable clean looking, and to perfect spec.

It should be here by this Thursday!

Yeah i emailed the indifocus guy about buying his stuff, but i think I'll just buy cavisions stuff. indifocus doesn't have the greatest customer support anyhow. I'd have already bought this, but money is tight, can't wait for my Christmas bonus and my tax return, yay $600! lol.

By the by, what is the Irvb's focus ring? I've been trying to find something to use as a focus ring because my DOF adapter broke.

The hardest part of film-making for me is the marketing. I have plenty of ideas, and stories, but I'm not interested in the marketing side.

That's what koolpenguin said, and i agree to an extent, but i feel that they are tied together, because if you have a great idea you might feel more excited and be able to pitch your story better and get more money. Marketing sucks either way though.

This is the focus wheel for us people with no 35mm adapter who can't stand the little wheel on the HV20/30:

    Here's a post by Irvb.

And this is the official thread (do some reading down the page)

Thanks Irvb... And go get on the waiting list (just post "Put me on the waiting list" or something). That list is a mile long so the sooner you get on it the better.

Part of the magic that can be created by interesting camera angles and great editing rely less on 'killer' ideas by presenting a mundane subject in an interesting way, engaging the viewer and entertaining him/her as well.

    Here's a good example:

I'm convinced this storyteller could make 'taking out the trash' or 'getting the daily mail' an interesting video.

See what you think. Just IMHO.

Yeah i get what you're saying, but i have more of a drive to work when i know i have a good idea, me and my friends are trying to pool our ideas and come up with something. It's just that with college and work time is against us! But when we get something together i'll be happy. and of course post it here.

I would like to agree with all of you and take it one step further in each category.

    The hardest part is:

Finding people that are better in the areas that you are weaker, that you can trust and rely on.

Finding and idea and developing it into a script that you can shoot within your budget.

Finding the money for a project, and then trying to find a means of distribution where you can earn at least enough that covers expenses so you can do the next one, and get some of those good people back again.

Finding away around those situations where Murphy's law rears it's ugly head, because you know it happens on almost every shoot.

Finally, remembering to have fun when you worry so much about your biggest production ever and you're putting in those 16 hour days because there are things you can't find someone else to do.

The hardest part for me....is just getting started.

I have lots of great ideas...but the motivation is lacking. But once I get started....LOOK OUT!!

    Hey Mal,
How about showing some of your work? I looked around here, but I didn't find anything really. I would have thought you would have more up considering how long you've been doing this.

Time is a small problem for me, but i tend to get writers block. But when i get an idea and have it fully formed, i basically don't have a social life until it's done.

Well, I mean isn't that what successful collaboration is all about? SpiderA with the time, maybe you should hook up with somebody like Mal with the ideas. Even cartoon strips are sometimes the work of a gag writer and a cartoonist each working towards a common goal.

I'm really surprised more collaborative efforts haven't been born from the membership here.

    Just saying.
