It should be able to play those tapes though I haven't tried. I am able to play mini-DV recorded in my Panasonic DVX100 in the HV20.

It would be very usefull to have the possibility to use this camera also as a deck when you have the need to read hdv tape from other camera, expecially from sony the most diffuse hdv cameras. DV is a standard that work from a camera to another but hdv seems to be a little bit different for sony, panasonic, jvc etc....

Well like I said I don't have direct experience with anything other than my (soon to be ex) DVX100. But reading the other forums it does seem several people are using the HV20 to read HDV tapes from their Canon XH A1. I know you're concerned about mixing camera brands but since the HDV standard is pretty well, standard, I would be surprised if the HV20 doesn't properly play back your Sony or JVC tapes (Panasonic has yet to introduce an HDV camera).
