Forum,
I'm inquiring about some alternatives to the HV30 for capturing, exporting to tape, etc.
I'm trying to preserve my camera head for as long as I can. Surely some of you have chosen other options yourself.
Thank you,
Trey

Thank you, Taky.
Can you think of a more affordable option?
I'll probably end up getting another HV30 as a second/back up cam.
So, I don't foresee using it as a capture deck.

The only other cam that *might* be cheaper would be the HV10, but those aren't that easy to come by. What i did was look for a broken HV20. I found one that could record to tape, but played back fine. Bought it for $300 from a member on this forum. So look around, you'll find something.

What is the expected life time of the head (and the cam)? I used a Panasonic DV for 8 years, but no sign of head wearing or any other defect. Actually, I'm not a professional user, just shoot family and travel films, but make archives of my films on DV tape.
If the HV 30 delivers the same durability and reliability as the Pana, I'm glad. In my opinion, unfortunately, Canon's mounting quality seems much lower than that of Pana (e.g. loose cassette cover, not precisely closing LCD panel, loose battery etc).
I wouldn't worry about the head wearing out. The head is for more likely to outlast how long you will be using the camera. I have shot well over 300 hours of video, played them all back more than once, viewing them in their highest quality, and at least one round of capturing to my computer. This is on my HV20 that I purchased 18 months ago.
Seriously, how many heads have you worn out on your old VHS players over the years?
By the way a tape deck to capture, duplicate, and play your tapes will cost you well over $2000.
That's an interesting spin.
One that I just might take you up on.

Sony make an HDV walkman.

You could probably bag one for about $1,100 (US). This has a 7" LCD too, so you could use it as field monitor.
Shame it's a bit pricey.

I have an HV30, and the only issues I have are "printing" to tape.
It's not as simple as I thought it would be. However there are some workarounds that I've browsed through on the internet. Someday soon I'll need to take the time do a more thorough search in order to get a better grasp of the process.

Again, I haven't studied this much, and I haven't tried these settings either.
With that being said, here's the link to where others are claiming to have found a way.
If you scroll to the bottom of page 1 you will see a detailed list of what camera/export settings to use.

Sorry, I think my post was a bit ambiguous. I meant that I have heard that some tapes recorded on the HV20 don't play on the Sony deck.
This is from feedback at B&H for that Sony deck:

I don't own it, so I just meant to suggest some extra research before buying.
Indeed, there seems to be issues with 24P playback unless the camera records in Advanced Pulldown (the HV does not).
Oh well, I guess that ship has sailed... not that I could afford one anyway.
Thanks for the info.
Cheers,
