Is there already a way to use the HV20 as an ultra-fancy webcam?
There are a few tools that do that for DV cams, they should work with DV-lock on, but it would be easier to work with the standard mode.

On the disc that comes with the camera there are Windows 2000 and ME drivers to use the camera as a webcam.
Unfortunately, they DON'T work in XP or Vista.
Very disappointing.
You can also download those drivers from the Canon website.
If you find anything else, let me know!
it works for me !!!!!!!!!
Just switch your HV20 in playback
Active DV large or DV capture mode on your cam
plug in firewire
open MSN
go to options/audio&video/select cam
enjoy
I've been trying and cannot get this to work in windows Vista.
Can anyone else confirm this or explain any additional steps that may be required? I've tried installing the WIA driver found on the CD, but it gives me a problem, saying the driver isn't compatible.
It's easy.... with the camera off connect it to the computer with the firewire cable, then....
1) Put the camera in "Camera" mode with tape in.
2) In the setup menu set it to DV Wide quality
3) Open your IM, go to it's camera setup menu
4) Select "Microsoft DV Camera & VCR" as the webcam
Viola!!
I've not found a way to get the built in mic to work just yet, might not, so you might need a different microphone.
I needed to install DVDriver software to make any of the webcam softwae tools work with my HV20. Google "dvdriver", install the software ($20), put camera in DV mode, connect via firewire, and you're golden. Camera audio does not work for this so you'll need a microphone for your computer to stream the audio. I take the tape out of the camera to keep the head powered off. Use SightSpeed for the best quality video chat.

I'd rather save my HV20/30 for video shooting instead of as a webcam. You can get a nice glass lens wide angle webcam for $10.

It's pretty easy to set up your HV20/30 as a webcam. The best program I've found in WebcamMax. Its wayyyyyy better than DVDriver.
The question I have is... is there ANY way to do it in HD? It would be so awesome to broadcast live in HD...?
I cant seem to find anything... almost seems like it might be a limitation of Windows XP. If anyone has any info, please let me know, thanks!

I don't need to do anything. I have XP. I attach it via fire wire, put it in DV mode and my video chat (dell video chat) recognizes it.
You could always just do A/V out to a tv card. I'm not sure how/if that works with the HV30. In some respects it is preferred over a typical webcam. As the noise is lower so the compression is higher. And you can tripod mount it for choice height / angle / zoom.
I didn't know that the HV30 could work as it's own webcam over firewire. Does that work in linux? Anything special I need to do to set that up? It might be time to google. As much as I dislike the tape and firewire aspect, it's looking more and more like I just can't shake the HV30 as the top runner in the sub $1,000 cams. As I try to justify swapping my tv card for a firewire card since I only have 2 pci slots. Or maybe I'll just put the older SD tv card in my older desktop.
Before I ever install a analog capturing card in my PC again I'll buy a real webcam for 20€.![]()

I picked up my capture card for $35 USD used off of craigslist. I could have gotten it new for $50, plus shipping. A little S-Video output from the digital camera to the VCR to the capture card and instant webcam. Pipe my audio gear to L/R of the same line on the VCR (or straight to the soundcard) and pro-ish audio as well. Which has already proved useful as I've finally fine tuned the audio delay to 0.164 seconds(+/- 0.005). -delay-audio in mencoder.
Hi all, I've read here that the HV20 does not send camera audio.
I can't get it to work, either. Picture seems OK into Skype.
The software is 01/23/2009 v2.1 and its "WebCamDV Audio" option is available in the Windows XP/Control Panel/ Sounds and Audio Devices picker for Voice and Sounds. Window's Test Hardware says I fail everytime.
I have the HV20 in Camera mode, set to DV mode. (not wide). Is anyone here getting Sound with this product? Any suggestions welcome. Does it somehow
still work as a live camera in Playback mode?
Happy New Year,
