Import photos from SD to computer?

May sound like strange question... But I did not yet succeed!!
Should be a very simple task, yet I can't do it for some reason.

I have photos on the SD Card in my HV30. How and with what
should I be able to put them on my computer?

iPhoto doesn't recognize the camera. Neither does my iMac (G4).
Do I need a cardreader maybe?

Use a USB cable, not a firewire one.
