Default I Shot A Wedding - Somebody Shoot Me!

I shot my first wedding a few weeks ago. Here's one of the chapters. I'll be posting some additional chapters in the next few days.

I'm really hoping some of you with more experience can give me some honest feedback.

By the way, the people on this board were instrumental in preparing me for this wedding shoot. Shooting this wedding was a trial by fire experience that lasted 14 hours and incorporated two Chinese tea ceremonies as well as a traditional Western ceremony (all in different locations) plus the usual bridal prep, photoshoot. cocktail hour and reception.

Far surpased my expectations. You relied on solid shooting to tell the story, that says alot about your style. Much much better shooting than some of the "pro" wedding shooters we are looking at right now for our wedding. Good job.

One question how did you get the old film look on there, i.e. those frame marks at the end?

    Thanks for the encouraging words.

I have a question for the wedding pros, though.

The finished DVD features all of the days events compiled into a 50 minute movie. It's split into chapters and each chapter is a self-contained mini-movie. The events can be viewed individually or as a whole. I also included a 10 minute compilation video. So, the entire wedding DVD features 60 minutes of stuff.

    Is this about right?

What do you guys include on your DVD's and how long do you usually make them? And how long does it typically take to complete the entire edit?

You can take a look at this thread

In the second post, I linked to a DVD navigation menu of an actual client DVD.

also DVD cover design and label printing

Thanks Lunchbox, I just bookmarked that thread. BTW, how long is your average wedding DVD.

I updated my previous post with another link point to DVD cover design and label printing. Don't miss that.

It's hard to say about average length of the DVD. There're 6 hours wedding, and there're 12 hours wedding package. I don't think you should be limiting the hour to be put on a DVD. If you record lots of good stuff, you should use them all. If necessary, you can also split the DVD to a main movie DVD and a Bonus feature DVD. But you should also include a highlights video.

From my experience (and style of shooting), I can tell the client that their wedding video will be APPROXIMATELY the length of their ceremony plus 45 minutes. Therefore, a 15 minute outdoor wedding might end up as 1 hour of edited DVD. A full Catholic mass (even when trimmed) would still be quite a bit longer. But I'm a documentary-style shooter, vs. the cinematic style...we tend to show a bit more (and not just the flying beauty shots edited to a popular song). Your mileage will vary.

Very nice. The indoor lighting looks flawless. What did you use for lighting?

35mm stock footage from Reelhouse.com, composited over the original video.

The only additional lighting was from an on-camera Litepanels Micro.

    Well done.

I wondered what was being said during the scenes when the bride was getting ready. At one point, she turned to the camera and I could see she said "Thank you". Would the conversation and banter have added anything to the video? i.e. the excitement building up to the "moment".

Darn. We should have teamed up! I'm here in Clackamas, OR, and I shot a friends wedding a few weeks ago. It would have been great to have a second camera, and then I could have been there to be your second camera.

PM if you would interested in ever getting together to make a short film or something.

I don't think the banter would have added much. When the bride turned and said thank you, I think I had just told her how nice she looked.
