Thread: Shutter Speed and Motion Blur

Default Shutter Speed and Motion Blur

So I've filmed a few things here and there using HDV24p and a tv mode shutter speed of 1/48. I chose that shutter speed, because it is what is said to be the proper speed when comparing to motion film cameras. I've noticed that I get motion blur when people move sometimes. I figured that the way to solve this is to use a faster shutter speed, as is what my research as helped me conclude.
Now, if I use 1/48th shutter speed for times I film conversations or just scenes without a lot of movement, then a scene later I use a higher shutter speed for a
foot chase scene or whatever with motion, will it look different than it should or is it common practice to mix shutter speeds as long as my frame rate stays the same?

I guess when I'm recording events such as a graduation I have lined up in a couple of weeks, I'll shoot at 1/60th shutter speed. I mean I figure I don't need it to be 1/48, because it doesn't have to look "filmic". I just can't present the videos to the people I recorded them for with that motion blur. Even if they're not going too fast, it seems 1/48th has given it to me from time to time. What would you say is a good aperture to have along with my 1/60th shutter speed when recording live events? Oh and I know the aperture would depend on the lighting situation, so since it's inside an auditorium type room for a graduation, I'm expecting pretty decent lighting. I'm thinking a pretty wide aperture like 2.0 or so...
