Default Capture: Device cannot be found

    Hardware:
    • MAC G5 Tower Dual core
    • 2 gigs ram
    • system OS X: 10.4.11
    • Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL
    • Capture Card: AJA Kona HD/SD (not that it matters)
    • Firewire 400 cable

    Camera:
    • Cannon HV30
    • Camera set to "Play" mode
    • Settings: HDV (PF24), "CINE" mode, Comp. OUT = 1080i/480i

    Software:
    • Final Cut Pro 6.0.4

    FCP settings:
    • Easy setup....
    • Format = HD
    • Rate = (all rates)
    • Use= HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60

FCP gives the following error message on startup:
"unable to locate the following external devices: HDV (1440 x 1080) 60i"
FPC gives the following error message on F8 (log and transfer):
"Unable to initialize HDV deck. Please make sure deck in connected and try again."

I have been able to get VTR (device) control of the camera using the following settings under "Audio / Video Settings". However NO VIDEO just black screen.:
    • Sequence Preset: DVCPRO HD - 1080i60
    • Capture Preset: DVCPRO HD - 1080i60 48 KHz
    • Device Control Preset: DVCPRO HD FireWire

These are the threads which I have used to try and solve the problem:

Many seem to have similar problems to me, however I cannot get any video to show, nor can I get FCP to control the camera except for that one setting I mentioned above. I have also tried different settings within the camera.
In the "PLAY/OUT SETUP2" in "Play" mode, the bottom of the screen says "HDMI OUT" even though the only cable plugged in is the firewire.
I have tried playing the video manually, playing the video with FCP and the (not recommended) setting stated above.

Using a Analog / DV converter box I'm able to use the component out cable supplied with the camera to send an analog signal to the box and then use the same firewire cable to then get an image into FCP. But that completely defeats the purpose of having a HD camera. Point is that I can send video to the computer using the same firewire cable.

The System Profiler utility sees the camera as...
System Profiler: Hardware: Firewire: VIXIA HV30

I have an AJA Kona capture card. Is there a cable to go from HDMI to SDI. Then I wouldn't care about firewire. Device control is not very important with this camera.

I have also tried both front and back ports, tried starting the computer and camera power and FCP in different combinations.

Who wants to try and solve this? Any takers? I'm completely frustruated and about to return the camera.

Ok, I got it working!!!! YEA!!!!

I followed the exact capture workflow from...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302407

    And the settings from...
    http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?t=669

    There Rico said....

"Ok then start finalcut, once open go to the Audio/Visual Settings and click on the summery tab, then put the setting like this

    sequence Preset = hdv-1080i50

    Capture preset = HDV

Device control prest = HDV 1080i50 Firewire Basic

    Video playback set to None
    and Audio Playback to Default"

"i just turned it to play mode and changed my "play out setup" from "auto" to "hdv" i think thats what did the trick! "

So I made sure that I had these combinations of settings in the camera and FCP and did it in the order prescribed on the Apple site.

I also Repaired the permissions using the Apple Disk Utility (did that before) and I thought that trashing the Plist in FCP was also a good idea (didn't need to do that).

Here again are the links that I found using this forum that helped me a lot...

I'm a bit concerned still because I remember reading (hopefully on one of the above apple links) that there is some issue with the pulldown rate and converting interlaced to non-interlaced and the setting to help solve that was the HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60. Maybe I'm splitting hairs but I wonder if the setting I currently got to work is going to make the footage look as best as possible.

My set up that now allows the HV30 to be controled and footage to play in the Log and Capture window:

    FCP:
    Sequence Preset = HDV - 1080i60
    Capture Preset = HDV
Device Control Preset = HDV FireWire Basic
    Video Playback = none
    Audio Playback = Default

Camera settings (Camera Mode , firewire cable unplugged):

    REC/IN SETUP...
    HD Standard = HDV24

    PLAY/OUT SETUP
    comp.out = 1080i

Camera settings (Play Mode , again cable unplugged)

    REC/IN SETUP...
    DV Rec Mode = SP

    PLAY/OUT SETUP 1
Playback STD = HDV ( not auto )
    TV Type = 16:9

    PLAY/OUT SETUP 2
    Comp.out = 1080i
    DV output = HDV/DV

I set the settings in FCP without the camera plugged in, and then quit out. Then followed the apple site (see link).

OOoooo K, I hope that helps anyone who is having similar problems. Without the folks in this forum the camera would have gone back to the store. Many thanks to all!
I think I had all these things at one point or another, just not the right combination.

I will try to post findings on more settings that work as I come across them.

I gave myself a good rating because, hey that was a lot of reading :-)

I'm still interested in anyone knowing if its possible to go directly from the HDMI on the camera to an SDI on a capture card to take advantage of the supposed 4.2.2 color space???
