Default Step up ring needed for filter?

    Hello all,

hope someone reads this soon - i have to place an order asap - but I've been trying to see if I need a step up ring if I want to add a UV filter for my new HV30?? I know Canon's doesn't need one but what about the ones from B&H, by Cokin or Olympus?

I've tried to figure it out for several hours to no avail...

    Thanks!

as long as the filter fits the HV30's threading (43mm), you won't need a step up ring.

Ha! Well I'm confused after reading a ton of threads on here, esp the one started by unluckytoe this January.....she got one but also got lenses etc. which I am not getting right now.

Hopefully *someone* will be kind enough to humble themselves and help me see clearly, lol. Even my local cam shop didn't know.

This is what you need. No step up ring required.

Thanks Stefano!! I guess I'm OK if I choose a 43mm filter then. I just wasn't sure cause the "threading" on the top of lens (2 tiny ridges) seems so small to hold anything to them...as compared to my still camera.

So I guess you're saying this one would fit:

Thanks, PadawanGeek, I had that picked first...then saw the other in another thread. So I'm good then.

Thanks a ton. Should have posted here a while back, lol

Yeah, either of those rings will work. Also, I'd suggest picking up a lens hood in addition to a UV filter for your new HV30, if you haven't already.

Oh my, that is amazing. Definitely getting a hood.

What bag do you use for traveling? Mine will be too small after adding all this stuff to it and I'd rather not have many bags with me...whew.

Would love a recommendation if you have one.

Thanks all for the awesome help!!

If you want to future-proof yourself, buy a 43-to-58mm step-up ring and then buy your filters in 58mm size. That way, you eliminate the chance for vignetting (dark corners) and if you decide to later buy a wide angle lens adaptor of the variety most of us use, your filters will fit it.

Also, please do a search before posting a question. Many subjects have been covered and there's already a wealth of info in here.

    Padawangeek,

If a filter fits directly on to the HV with no need for a step up ring, does this mean that a 43 mm lens hood will fit directly on to a filter that fits directly on to the HV?

I like the hood you showed me, but I just want to make sure it will fit on filters.

    Thanks,

    Trey

    Default oops

I think cycle writer answered that question already right above. Sorry.

I already have WA lens which obviously has the step up ring included. So, it looks like the best thing for me to do is buy filters that are going to fit my step up ring.

I'm gathering from this that filters go behind a wide angle lens and not on the front? Or is it optional?
