Default why are hv20s more expensive than hv30s

I bought my HV20 when it was $657 landed from Amazon, and I casually check the price every now and then to see if I bought too high since the HV30 is replacing it. It seems that on the whole, the HV20s were selling for more than the HV30s and I am curious as to why this is so since most times the older technology will be cheaper.

I am not a professional, merely a home movie person, so I don't know in depth about cameras.

    Just curious.

    Thanks

A lot of times, if you look on say, NewEgg, you'll see that 2 year old processors are like $876, and the brand new ones are $75. Its a wierd thing in technology that happens sometimes. Right now on Dell, they have several 500 GB hard drives. Most are about 100-150, and then there's one that is $839. It's not because it's better or anything. Part of it is to ensure that no one buys the old ones and gets the newest ones that are actually in production I think. Some loophole in the supply and demand structure.

You are probably looking at different dealers, some who are not as honest as others, some who advertise incorrect prices. But you didn't really say where you saw those prices. So, there could be other reasons also. I find the HV20 in short supply at places where it is really available.

The HV20 is not really older technology.

Probably because the HV20 is still a popular item, but they stopped production of it.

Look at the Panasonic PV-GS500: "Date first available at Amazon.com: May 12, 2006"
...but it's presently selling for $949.99.

And that's a standard definition consumer camcorder.

Oh yeah, the GS500 is still a great camera. The 400 is even better because it has full manual controls, even a focus ring. It's probably over $1000 if the 500 is that much.

    I have a GS300, it's pretty nice. Not as nice as a 400 or 500... Or HV20.

When each product was released, the initial suggested MSRP price was higher for the HV20. Earlier in the year when the HV30 replaced the HV20 , several of the internal electronic components had dropped in cost - so the savings were passed to the consumer - with a lower MSRP price for the HV30.

There are a few dealers with existing inventory of new 2007 HV20's but they tend to maintain a common pricing structure for all the products they sell. And not try to compete with the lowest online search engine prices.
However now that global energy costs are higher, since June 2008 most goods are actually going up in price.

When you shoot with the HV20, everyone knows "Oh, this guy is making a movie in 24p". When you shoot with the HV30, people think "He shoots some crap in 30p for the Net".

The HV30 has 24p as well though.

Might have something to do with this:

I think it has something to do with the hv20 capturing the buzz? (I'm honestly a tiny little bit happy because I was one of those that forked full price last year)

Well, to be honest with you, I'd rather be holding a lady in my hands than a dude. So I'm okay with the HV-20 being feminine. ;-)

haha hello (im new by the way)

I just bought (literally, like 10 mins ago) an HV20 on newegg, refurbished, it was like 570 or something.

Please i dont want to here any (oh you got ripped off, etc because i am happy, and anything over 400 bucks is expensive and completely out of my price range but i did it, and theres no turning back so yeah, i dont wanna know if i made the wrong choice.) but i researched forever, and it seemed like the best choice so yeah, im gonna expand it eventually. Make my own rigs, those lens hoods, and maybe even a focusing wheel, because i like to make stuff for cheap rather then buy it. I made a small stabilzer...its pretty cool...not heavy enough. anyway,

    yeah newegg is cheap!

The 20 is no longer being produced is the reason.

I believe the same jump will occur when the 30 is phased out. People who wanted one but waited for the price to come down, then find they can't get them anymore and are willing to pay most any price to have it, even above msrp.

As pointed out, same has happened with the 2 Panny's, 400 and 500.

    Go figure.

In Malaysia, HV20's cost price from Canon for camera shops is much higher than HV30's. The reason being they stopped producing HV20s, so the Malaysia headquarters didn't bother to adjust the cost price. As for HV30, there's nothing to replace it yet, so they are constantly adjusting the price to keep it competitive against other brand names. Hence a HV20 can costs up to 1250 USD while HV30s are selling for 1000 USD.

Yeah...not quite two years ago the GS400 (which was two years old at the time) was going for $1,600.00 on EBay. Everyone wanted one... I ended up with the GS500 myself...but I was happy regardless.
