You have it positioned too high on the HV focus roller. Try repositioning the ring to where the rubber wheel is just below or above center of the HV focus roller. See illustration detail.

It should make positive contact but not be distorted. If the rubber wheel occasionally slips (doesn't turn the focus roller) then it is too far from where it needs to be in proper contact. We're only talking about a fraction of an inch either direction, nothing major.

Also the ring must be as full and flat against the HV as it will fit. The chrome front of the HV lens should be perfectly flush with the front of Irvsb MFR. This will also reduce ring internal noise somewhat.

    Hope this helps.

I know enough to know what works ... at least until it blows up. Then I know it don't.

I've read about people having problems with their focus rings due to coldness, but do you think that extreme heat could also cause problems? It was 115 degrees Fahrenheit today, enough heat to crack structures and set the state ablaze...
Could this kind of heat create any issues with the ring?
    Thanks,
    Steve.

It should be as fine as any rubber device, but it may spontaeneously combust...I'd keep it in the 'fridge.
Where are you that it was 115º?

lol. I live in Melbourne, Australia. We got a whole lot of bushfires burning at the moment and some of the older structures around the city were cracking due to the heat. Yesterday was our hottest day on record. Oh, and thanks for the reply.

I recently received my Irv Design manual focus ring and I thought I share my first few test shots trying this baby out.

The ring does create some noise, not sure if your able to hear if over the music or not...but over all the rings works great.

Yeah it sounds like a drop of glue would solve it, but it's tough to get glue in there. (I glue them before putting the whole assembly together) You can try to get some glue in there, and if it doesn't work, we can work out an exchange or something.

I just got some glue and glued the rubber piece to the small metal piece. BUt unfortunately with my unsteady hands, I got superglue on the edges of the rubber piece, now when I turn the wheele, I don't get a smooth turn due to the superglue on the edges. Do you know where I might be able to get a similar piece to replace the rubber piece, and should I try hardware stores?

You could mail Irv and ask for a replacement.

Me. It's lost somewhere in the postal system.

The USPS online tracking for my focus ring still just says: "Your item was processed and left our ORLANDO, FL 32862 facility on January 29, 2009." I talked to a person at their 800 number to get them to find out what happened, and later received a call from my local post office that they're "looking into the matter". My guess at this point is that it's lost forever.

Next I'll need to figure out how to file a claim.

^ Mine said it was in FL for days...next thing I new it was at my door. I became a bit worried too but thankfully it showed up

From the time I ordered to the time I received my MFR was about 7-8 days, just to give you and idea. I'm not sure how long you've been waiting.

Have you tried cleaning off the rubber piece? Nail polish remover (with acetone) on a q-tip might do the trick. If you do it quick it shouldn't hurt the wheel. (if it does, forget where you read this!)

Is the next batch coming soon? If not, would anyone like to sell theirs to me? Thanks!

So far with my experience with the focus ring, I'm pretty sure focusing while handholding the camera is not advisable.

Where did you get your tracking number? Because this is ridiculous. I ordered mine from the first batch with credit card, I haven't heard any news since...

    It's been 15 days.

Did you get a tracking number with your order?

It's been 16 days, in Canada. Still no ring.
