I am Stuck!! (Firewire captured video quality)

Straight to the questions...


I have been using hv20 for quite sometime now yet i seem to be getting NOT SO GOOD QUALITY video when i extract from the tape..

1) The videos i am able to extract are from firewire and are in 1440x1080 resolution...everything is fine but i have a feeling that i am missing something here since there are videos that look way better than mine.

For example the following videos :

So , tell me.. AM I MISSING SOMETHING HERE???

or is it because these FOOTAGES are extracted throught HDMI??

The terminology is "capture" to transfer video from the camcorder to your computer.

The second link doesn't work.

Firewire capturing is fine. You don't need HDMI. It's very likely your setting in the camera. are you sure you are capturing HDV?

Yeah i am sure the "captured" files are Hdv. I use Hdvsplit for the same and having no issues whatsoever.

Ok i just recorded and captured again in Hdv mode. I also have removed the " DV lOCK" in the play segment FYI... Still the same...


Can you please tell me the best settings i can do in my HV20 ? I will try once with the settings and see if that will solve the problem....

Its most likely to be a problem at the editing stage, outputting video is a bit of black art.

Have you viewed the raw unedited files from the camera and do these look OK?

Yes, alsone, These are the Raw files that are seen after capturing from Hdvsplit.

No you've rendered them into wmv / qt files.

The files I mean are the ones straight from the camera untouched (.m2t), they huge in size. Have you viewed those and do they show the same problems?

EDIT: I just watched your 1st video and I'm struggling to see any problem. Are you sure your pc's up to the task of playing back HD video?

It takes quite a high spec pc to play back HD video.

Your video looks fine to me on my pc. The comparison in the kitchen - handheld / JR steady cam looks ultra clear and smooth. Chasing the kids around the rooms looks slightly foggy but I think that might be down to th light levels and exposure rather than the cam. The bit at the end in the mirror also looked fine.

What exactly is the problem you're observing?

I'm wondering here, is my computer able to play-back smoothly my hdv? I have a turion64x2 with ati radeon express series card on a dell inspiron 1501. I seeing herky-jerky with my playback with Vegas Platinum. Have 2 gigs of mem. Anandcj's video plays fairly smooth and looks clear compared to mine. Plus, is it better to have the mt2 files split up or as one large file? What do most do on this process?

Microsoft post specs but in my opinion, their specs always seem optimistic.

Best test is download a HD file from here:

Then try playing it back.

There's a mixture of files on there so you can choose the most likely size ie 720P or 1080P.

If its smotth you're ok, if not you need a more powerful pc.

All these play OK.

Thanks for the advice, Alsone, not sure this laptop will do it now. The SD video played back ok on my sampling, but the HD was not so smooth. I ran both 720 and 1080 in the Vegas NLE, and the 1080 pretty much stuttered like the 1080 footage I took. The 720p ran smoother with some slight jolting. Thanks again. Now I know I need a mean-machine!

Use a dedicated player for playback. Judging playback by what you see in Vegas will always be disappointing even on a fast machine. WMP can play m2t files or try downloading the free VLC player. Vegas preview bears only slight resemblance to actual playback.

Thanks CycleWriter for that tip on Vegas playback. Just watched my rendered mpeg2 clip off the Vegas Platinum NLE, looks good while viewing it on WMP. Wasn't sure how to watch the m2t files which looked like this in Windows Explorer. What's with these long file extension to denote the next clip. Better to take one long clip.
