Default Using external monitor with vegas 8.0

I really need help with setting up my external preview monitor! I have got this far; I have connected the camera with firewire to the pc, and have an AV cable going from the camera to the tv. I can playback footage on the tape through the tv, but it is in black and white (thats another problem, is it because I have an nstc camera and a pal tv?), but i have no clue and have had no luck with getting anything to come through the firewire and onto the tv for previewing.
    This is with Vegas 8.

    Please help! Thanks

I am not sure you can use that setup... The HDTV (not non-HDTV) should have a VGA or DVI or HDMI input, and should be connected to the graphics card as a real monitor, not to the camera. Then Vegas will recognize the monitor without a problem.

I couldnt get that to work, but I have got further with the firwire method now.

I now have the video playing on the tv, but its in black and white Is there a way of fixing this?

Could the black and white be because of the ntsc camera and pal tv?

Could be... Try with a composite or S-Video cable instead of HDMI/component.

But why weren't you able to get the other method to work? That's the recommended method, unless your TV is not an HDTV.

    I have it working now!
Found an old pal digital 8 sony camera with dv out and it works with colour even!

New problem though - they are out of sync. On vegas in the preview device settings I have sync offset on 12 and the tv is the tiiiinyiest bit behind the pc.

Is there any way of offsetting it more?

Instead of using old ways to get this done, just get a proper HDMI/DVI TV and use that as a second monitor, or simply buy a 1920x1200 PC monitor.

I don't understand why you're trying to direct connect the camera to the secondary display. That certainly won't allow you preview capability from within Vegas. Vegas is an editor and preview is for the captured media, not direct playback of the camera. You need to connect that monitor as a secondary display device, which means you need a dual-head video card. Then there should be no problems with sync.

Sounds to me like you are trying to do two things, both wrong. You either want to playback video directly from the camera (direct connection via HDMI or AV out) or preview of your captured video from within Vegas on a secondary display (dual-head video card needed). If you're trying to preview capture in Vegas while simultaneously watching the cam's real-time output on a secondary display connected directly to the camera, they will never be in sync. Why would you need to do this anyway? The AV output would not be in HD.

Either you're really confused or you haven't explained yourself well in this thread.

Actually, I am interested in this thread. I would like to preview on a standard old-school NTSC televison set when doing color correction to ensure that I am viewing the footage in the right color space. Is there a way to use the HV20 to preview in this manner?

    Computer -> Firewire -> HV20 -> Composite -> Television

I am pretty sure this is impossible in HD, but with SD (DV) resolutions?

I suppose you could output your video back to tape and then play it back with the HV20 using the composite cable. But that's a lot of work since you would have to go back to the computer and re-output every time you make a change. A better solution is what I said earlier: a dual-head graphics card. Mine has DVI and 15-pin VGA out connectors. I can connect to DVI or standard analog monitors and switch between using either one as my preview device. This is very handy when editing in Vegas since it allows me to place my preview window anywhere I want.
