Pre-amp are devices made by juicedlink, beachtek. They allow XLR microphones to run long cables so you can boom your microphone and get better sound. These run around $300. If you just want an onboard camera, you should get the dm50 or rode video mic, (both of these around $150). If you want to take a step up, you should get the rode ntg-2 or at897(which have xlr inputs), buy an xlr to 3.5mm adapter ($10-15), and your set. You can choose later on if you want to upgrade to a juicelink/beachtek(so you can boom) and not have to buy new mics.
