No idea.. I just asked. So what are my options? Can I send you back that extra stick of RAM?

Dell India: Well sir, since it's something you've paid extra for. I can let you keep the RAM and we'll send you a $50 gift card.

Me: Oh.. I guess that'll be fine.

So I also placed order for these:

    Geforce 8600GT dual DVI videocard:
    (2) Samsung 750GB SATA HD
    (2) Seagate 750GB Free Agent Firewire/USB/eSATA drives (these will be used in nightly backups to mirror the Samsungs
A used Dell 2001FP monitor to go with the one I currently have.

I think I've got a pretty decent system now that will last hopefully as long as my current Dell Pentium 4 did.. The only thing that sucks is the Inspiron 530 doesn't have Gigabit Ethernet....

Is XP Home adequate for video editing? I assume it is so.. but wanted to confirm. I've been using XP Pro SP2 on my P4..

I assume I would want to do a format on this Dell once it arrives to get rid of all the crap that are installed on it.

Yes. The difference between Home and Pro are networking, VPN, Remote Desktop, IIS, FTP.. stuff like that. For editing purpose, XP Home can do the job.

    booggerg,

I have been using XP Home for about 5 years, 3 different machines. I don't recall any differences for editing. Perhaps if you are setting up a render farm you may need XP Pro.

Ive been running a 3.4ghz Dell 400sc as a home computer for close to 4-5 years now. It's more than anything I could ever of imagined in terms of stability and longevity.

I believe Dell is using BTX motherboard which has no Parallel port and PS/2 mouse and keyboard. So your KVM switch will not be useful.

There're USB KVM swtich. But I have been using Remote Destop Connection. Works well.

Hey all, and boogerg, what's the scoop on that 8600 dual dvi video card? Comes with 256 ram? Would you be able to upgrade with that motherboard? Sure wish there was a choice for a hard drive with Raid possibilities. Still, I'm tempted to go with this deal with the 8600 video card.

Oh granola! I'll keep on a searching then. I'm just about ready to sink some coins into a new system. I won't hold my breath though, thanks for the heads-up Taky.

I ordered the machine on the evening of 4/30 and I received it today. No pricing mistake.

It has two 32-bit PCI slots.
    One PCI x 16
    One PCI x 1

Not the most expandable but it can accomodate everything I need out of it at this point. Knock on wood that the PSU will be sufficient.

    1 M-Audio Audiophile soundcard
    1 Firewire card
    1 gigabit ethernet card
1 GeForce Video card with 256MB of ram for $54 from zipzoomfly.com
