Well, since the problem doesn't seem to be readily solved here's ONE thing you might do when you're having your SD footage all combed up: use the Fieldskit deinterlacer from Revision FX to make things smooth. It works really well. Using the built-in deinterlacer from AE of premiere might also work. Nevertheless, it should not be like this. It's a shame this problem.

Tooch, could you tell me how you downconvert HDV to SD on the computer? I'm quite new to that. You help would be appreciated!

    Hi there,

I´ve made some tests with my NTSC HV30 yesterday, and I can confirm that there is definitely NO stairstepping in SD mode on the NTSC-Version of the HV30. I´ve attached an image to show this. To me, the chart looks perfectly fine. I have played back the avi file in Windows Media Player and made a snapshot - this is why the image size is 1024x768 pixels.

While I believe you, that's a horrible screen capture, which has scaled 480-lines to 576-lines and blurred them terribly. You really need a 1:1 pixel screen cap to be sure. VirtualDub will do this easily, as will many other programs.

    Cheers,
    David.

I can confirm the issue. My PAL HV30 has exactly the same symptoms. You can see my results at http://www.mideo.org/2008/05/hv30-sd...ution-problem/

Default Does this mean the HV20 is a better buy for PAL users?

Seeing as the PAL version of the HV30 doesn't have the 30P mode, does this bug mean the HV20 is a better camera for PAL users?

About the only other differences I've heard are the LCD being to read in daylight on the HV30, and the different zoom controller.

    Bill.

Thank you for your effort, mideo! Let's hope it can be fixed by firmware update. Proven this is a real bug I will now contact Canon Europe and encourage any other unsatisfied customers to do so.

Same here, HV30 PAL, bought 3 or 4 weeks ago, HD = perfect, SD = unusable.

    Disappointed to say the least.

Tested my camera again last night, can definitely confirm that the problem exists on Australian models and is unusable

I have just sent an email to Canon Australia, here is hoping that they will read it and maybe take some action

    Here we go ...

    http://nl.canon.be/Support/Consumer_...7&page=1&type=

For Mac users: copy the download-link and change the .exe at the end to .dmg – otherwise you will only get the windows version.

Does it work? I'll let you know.

Great, so now we have a firmware to work with, although it is for PAL cameras. At least it's a start.

Something has happened and the firmware update page is not working on any canon regional sites...

Does anybody know what has happened?

Can anyone post here the firmware file (PAL), in order for all of us to get it?

    Thank you all in advance!!!

After some searching, I found (well, you probably have already found this, but I just want to share it with all interested) the link that directs to Canon Japan, with the firmware files for both PC and Mac users.

    http://web.canon.jp/imaging/dcp/firm-e/hv30/index.html

Hope it helps anyone interested. Just some precautions for anyone who doesn't read everything on that page out of excitement to get the firmware, hehehe...

    A. It is suitable for all PAL HV30's ONLY!!!

    B. Moreover, it is suitable ONLY if the seventh digit (of the camcorder's serial number) from the left is 0, 1, or 2.

    Examples:

    1. ******0*****
    2. ******1*****
    3. ******2*****

    Hope you find this useful!!!

Hi all!!! Congratulations for finding a solution on this bug. I wish to buy an Hv30 and I live in Europe. The price in my country is very very low (the store says it has a 43% discount!!!) and this thread made me understand why, while the hv20 is not on discount at all. I suppose I will buy it only if the seventh digit is 0 or 1 or 2. (right?)
I have a question for you. I wish to shoot in HD but I use a dv-storm canopus video card (which cannot handle HD). The down converted Hd to dv footage will it be better than the original sd dv footage?
    Thank you and congratulations again.

I was very disappointed when i've read the written and I even downloaded the update, but it seems that we don't need to update, because the camera is made with the new version, 1.0.1.0. I bought the camera from USA, California, 2 months ago. View my attachment.
