Dirty Grey Diamond Shaped Blob On Canon HV30 Image

Hello All,

I got a Canon HV30 off eBay a few months back and yesterday I noticed a strange mark on the footage while playing back what I'd recorded over the weekend. I then looked back and noticed that the mark had always been there and I just hadn't noticed it. I can't see any marks on the lens, I've cleaned it with a soft cloth and re-tested. I also ran a tape cleaner through last night and no change. The mark doesn't show up on the lcd screen or the viewfinder.

I've attached two pics showing the annoying blob.....or I'm being followed by a UFO ;)

Has anyone come across something like this and could advise if this is a problem with the sensor or anything else?

What does "manufacturer refurbished" SDHC cards actually mean?

Just wondering, because I can't imagine it would be as it actually sounds. It's laughable to me to think the people at Sandisk would pry open each plastic SDHC card casing and individually re-solder the defective chips inside and re-sell them. Surely it's gotta mean something else?

HV30 - Left Cam On by Accident: Is Battery Terminallly Ill Now?

Back in early 2012 I replaced the standard battery for my HV30 with a Canon BP-2L24H High Capacity 2400mAh Li-Ion Rechargeable Camcorder Battery due that the old one was, well, getting old. As stated in subject line, I made a boo-boo one day a couple of months ago (didn't turn the camcorder off) and ever since then, it seems the battery just doesn't last very long anymore. Was this a fatal error -- and does keeping it plugged in for recharge longer help or hinder its already iffy lifespan?

Asymmetric vignetting

I have noticed, that when I put accessories like sunshades or wide converters on my HV30, and zoom wide until they vignette, that the vignetting is assymetric: it starts much sooner on the right side tham on the left.

For example, with the raynox 0.66x 52mm wide converter, at the widest zoom, only the right two corners show some vignetting, the left corners are clear.

This bothers me, because it looks that I cold use widest zoom without vignetting, if only things were symmetrical.

Is this normal behavior of the HV30, or is there something broken in my cam?

So has tech. fully caught up yet with new formats like AVCHD? HV40 or Tapeless?

I'm on the fence which route I should go.. with what I know and am comfortable with; working with tape. Or a tapeless cam, of which its format uses a lot more cpu power and i'm not sure how simple it is to transfer the video - drag and drop? The computer I have right now can't even competently edit 1440x1080 video, so I will need to buy a new computer either way in the future no matter which route I choose.

Can someone recommend an HV40 equivalent cam that has 24p (no de-interlacing needed) and the zebra pattern function?

Will a modern 'cheapo', otherwise generic off-the-shelf PC handle the current AVCHD and other formats without a hitch?

Hey guys whilst im booking for 2014, i still want to get slightly more bookings and we have a video weekend coming up, canopies, champagne and all that stuff. First one we have done and wondered if any one has done this before and what to offer discount wise on the day. How did you show your work? Was thinking of producing a disc with say 10 top trailers on and two three good films for people who want to watch further. My big 50 inch tv in bluray. Pricelists and then book on the day now you get % discount? Any ideas to really make this happen? cheers steve

GH2: Moire with Smooth Mode ... and no moire with Cinema Mode

Interesting ...

I was doing some test shoots for an interview I'll be doing in 2 days, setting up lights, hanging a black backdrop,
testing audio with the ATR3350 into a DR-05 and checking sync ...
and initially I had the GH2 set to smooth with -2 on all, and was getting very obvious moire on the red tie I was wearing.

Not thinking to try to cure the moire, I soon switched to Cinema Mode with all set to 0 because things were looking a bit too flat with Smooth,
my skin tone was too washed out, and the moire on my tie disappeared totally.

The only thing different was Cinema Mode and all zeros. Everything else was exactly the same.

I shot for an other 20 minutes or more of me just sitting and talking, wanting to see how syncing audio would be with a long take,
and the moire was totally gone for sure, in Cinema Mode.

HV20 Questions!! Researching to buy

Hello all,

I am new to the site and have some questions concerning the Canon HV20.

Is this still a good camera to start filming?
How do you transfer media from these "disks" to the iMovie? Is it hard? Time consuming?
How durable is the camera?
Is it just auto focus or are there options for manual focus?

During filming in the anza-borrego desert (April 2013), under very dusty conditions, my HV20 (4 years old) stopped working. Now I can�t turn it on, even with charged battery. Red light doesn�t turn on when power cord is attached. Cassette won�t eject. I've 'banged' it many times. What should I do? Any way to open it and look for defective mechanical parts? How can I get the cassette out?

Equipment required to view/capture/digitize mini-dv tape shot with Canon HV20.

HV20: Why captured video are so dull

When I play the HV20 on my TV through HDMI it looks amazingly sharp and vivid. But when I capture the same video using Vegas pro 12 or Cyberlink Video director and then play it on the same TV, it looks very dull and soft. Any help would be appreciated.
