Hi

I am currently touring New Zealand and i have just purchased the HV20 here as i had to capture this amazing country in high def!

I am completely new to this so could someone please inform me of what post editing software is best to use?

Also a couple of terminologies i have read on here that i dont understand..."Workload" and "Pulldown" excuse my ignorance.

Thanks guys

You said you purchased the HV20 in NZ? Then you'll have a PAL version in which case you will have smooth time editing it.

Look at VEGAS for a very good program to edit, and there's cheaper ones too. VEGAS from Sopny has a fully functional TRIAL version:

(that's Windows software)

You give very little info, and as always, that's hard to answer.
I could go a half hour explaining things based on a Winbdows system, only to find out in a reply post: "oh, I have a Mac by the way".

So check various NLEs; VEGAS for PC is great, and FCP is great for the Mac.

HI Haager, welcome to the forums!

Editing software depends on many factors, chiefly your operating system and your budget.

If you're on a Mac, Final Cut Pro is said to be pretty good.
For PC, you can choose between Videostudio, Pinnacle and Premiere Elements on the lower end of the budget, and Sony Vegas, Avid and Premiere Pro 2 on the higher end.

I think you meant to ask about "Workflow", not "Workload". As I understand it, a workflow is every step from capture to output. Your workflow might consist of recording to tape, then capturing through HDVSplit using firewire, then importing to an NLE, then rendering out using a certain Codec, and finally burning to DVD using another app. Your workflow is affected by many things, like whether you need to add an extra step for "pulldown removal". This is best explained here:

Enjoy your HV20 and New Zealand, it's an amazing country.
Kia Ora!

Aye, just be careful when mentioning 1080 when talking about your HV20; it might be one
of the few countries where 1080 doesn't garner respect for high video resolution, but rather
start discussions of poison invented by Germans during WWII!

Thanks for the help guys, i have a PC so i will give Vegas a go.

As for the "1080" poison i doubt that is an issue here as NZ is too far awy from Europe to have been affected by WWII

Thanks :)

Cool, about Vegas. Many here use it, and it's a really neat program. They have different versions I think to suit your budget, just make sure it can handle HDV footage.

Re:1080; unfortunately I think NZ is the worlds largest user of Sodium fluoroacetate (1080).
DOC (Dept. of Conversation...err...I mean Conservation) uses it to kill Possums. I believe it will kill other things too, but then of course the bureaucrats and consultants that are endorsing it now are long retired, and won't have to answer for it.

Sorry for getting political. Luckily we can do that here...let's hope no mods will move my post here to the Tavern, which is where it is starting to belong!

I beg to differ. Check out Gallipoli:

I have kiwi and ozzie mates and they go to Turkey religiously every year...

Yes you are right NZers definitley fought in WWII. I was meaning they weren't invaded....sorry :-)

New Zealand is always helping out in the wars, they have troops in the middle east as well helping our boys (US).

It is a totally different enviroment in NZ, i am considering selling up and living here but its quite difficult getting permanant residency.

Anyway back to the point of this form, the HV20....great camera! :hv20-smilie03:

Well...not really. But then you're not allowed to be discouraged by asking officials! :)

Now back to HV20....

first post on this forum. 1080 is a real nastie here in NZ, especially if you are into hunting. Layed to kill possums, but does serious damage to Deer and other game. Has Canon invented a better poison in the 1080i ? :)
Just got my HV20 couple days ago, and enjoying getting to grips with it.
Great forum by the way.
