View Full Version : Video Settings for PAL

Hi,
I have a PAL HV20 and am unsure what project video settings to use in Vegas 7.
If i shoot standard HD then I choose "HDV 1080-50i (1440x1080, 25.000 fps)" that seems clear.
If if i put the cam in HD PF25 mode am i still just recording standard HD with some different color settings? or is it different. Vegas has a preset "HDV 720-25p (1280x720, 25.000 fps)" but isn't the resolution i'm getting 1440x1080?
Basically is there actually any difference between the two HD modes on the PAL HV20 or does that setting just teak some color etc... settings.
My read of it is that they both are 25 frames per second with 1080i. i.e. no difference. And as a result you could shoot both modes on the same tape and the only difference you would notice is the the colors are maybe a bit softer (movie like) in the 25p mode.
Also, if the cam has a 1920x1080 sensor they why is the output 1440x1080? I'm guessing it the HDV spec, is that right?
thanks
Richard

Use the HDV 1080-50i preset, and change the options accordingly, set interlace to progressive etc, and save that as a profile HDV 1080-25p.
You need Intensity card to get fzull 1920x1080 output i believe.
there are 2 different things. 720p and 1080i. only i have answered this a few times, search the forum a bit.

So is it right to say that...
HD (std) is recording - 1440x1080 25fps interlaced
and
HD(PF25) is recording - 1280x720 25fps progressive scan
1080 being interlaced you can't say 25fps. it's 50i, they're mixed 2 frames.
if you import footage in vegas, right click on it in the timeline and go to properties. see what's it's type and the select a preset project format accordingly. then right click again and uncheck maintain aspect ratio. you won't need that anymore now and will render faster (unless you output in a different format which requires resize/crop - like letterboxing).

I'm doing the following.
1. Create project with following settings HDV 720-25p (1280x720, 25.000 fps) This preset defaults the pixel aspect ratio to 1.0000 (Square), not sure why as surely it is 1.7778. If i change this to 1.7778 everything gets stretched.
2. Capture the video shot in HD PF25.
3. The properties of the m2t file are 1440x1080x32, 25fps (progressive scan) Why doesn't it pick up that the size is really 1280x720x32?
4. When i play the clip back in the preview window it looks great.
5. If i add the clip to the timeline and get its properties says it is; 1440x1080x32 (Progressive) pixel aspect of 1.3333. The playback is blurred i am assuming because the aspect ratio is wrong.
6. I try unchecking maintain aspect ratio but it is still blurred. I also try setting the ratio to 1.7778 but this doesn't work either. Still blurred.
7. So the preview plays back great but the project not. I haven't tired rendering it yet but wouldn't that render blurred as well?
Can you help explain what is going on here? What i don't get is the whole aspect ratio business. The whole thing seems crazy. Wouldn't it just say oh you have 1280x720 that 1.7778 and be that simple.
thanks
richard
the m2t can't be 720p, it's 1440.
blurry it's because, probably, the quality of the video preview. change it to a better quality.
why do you keep creating 720p projects when you've got 1080i? use 1080i, 1.333 aspect. then when you render use whatever size you like.

I thought you said that when i shot HD PF25 i got 720p.
How can i be getting 1080i when i am shooting progressive. Aren't I getting 1080p or 720p.

Dear Richard08,
when you enable progressive mode, then hv20 reads from the CMOS sensor data as progressive images ,but records as interlaced. The conversoin is done by the cam's internal electronic logic board's and chip's. This mean that you get 1080i, but this will have enhanced sharpness and light sensitivity due to progressive setting.

Does that mean that I use the same project settings for both HD modes?
1440x1080 25fps (Interlaced)

At both settings the final product is the interlaced video. You can make an experiment and import as 25p and as 25i too in another project. If there will be no image or sound sync problems, then you can check the image quality on full-resolution monitor and find if there are any visible difference between both and if you find anything then you can decide for the P or for the I.
