View Full Version : 24p HDV to Standard DV

Hi,
I'm new to the forum, and very much in need of some sound advice. Here's what I'm looking to do: I don't have nearly the processor power to edit HDV footage, though I would like to take advantage of the more film-like look that 24p on the HV20 affords. What I need to know is:
1. Is it at all feasible to shoot in 24p HDV and convert to/edit as standard DV?
2. If so, which way of doing it will give me the best quality.
Also, I am using Premiere Elements 3.0 to edit, which according to the forums it seems is vastly inferior to Vegas. Is this a major stumbling block, too?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi, SilentBob...
My PC is a few years old, and I also have trouble editing HDV. So I regularly downconvert all my clips to 24P DV for smooth editing in Premiere, then replace them with the full-resolution HDV clips at the online stage. You could just as easily skip that final stage and just produce a very nice DV master.
I use the 24P pulldown removal method detailed in the 24P section of this forum. That's a good place to start reading. When I export my clips from VirtualDub, I use the resize filter to scale them to DV resolution, and compress them with a good DV codec. (I use MainConcept, although the free Panasonic one apparently also works very well.) Premiere handles them smooth as butter with no rendering, and they're true 24P.

Thanks a lot for your help. It sounds like it won't be nearly as much trouble as I thought.

Sorry to bring up an old topic, but I tried searching and couldn't find quite exactly what I was looking for.
I've down-converted my HD24p footage using DV-Lock on my HV20. Now, is it possible to perform pulldown on this down-converted DV24p footage?
I've already tried capturing it as the original HD24p, performing the pulldown, and then importing the AVI file into my NLE (Magix Movie Pro 11) But for some reason, the AVI doesn't play all the way in my editor. It will look fine for the first couple of minutes, but then it goes black all of a sudden. I'm not too sure what to do about it (besides maybe upgrading this old program), so I wanted to try re-capturing the HD24p footage as DV and then performing the pulldown on that.

Personally, I would do the pulldown removal and resize in one go during exporting from the HV20pulldown.exe application, and then use the created avi file to edit. Remember though, you must make sure that Premiere Elements 3 supports 24p. The v4 version requires a 24F addon timeline preset.
